2011 Chery J11 2.0 Litre Manual SUV Nov2016 Rego HAS MOTOR PROBLEM

2011 Chery J11 suv, HAS A MOTOR ISSUE. manual transmission ,67,000klm registered until late november 2016.
My sister in law bought this Chery privately a few months ago,then about two weeks ago ,something has gone wrong with the motor .It was only around the corner from home,when it began to make a loud noise from under the bonnet ?We have no idea whats gone wrong ,noise resembles a 'diesel'sound. Engine does start ,but i wouldn't think it would be driveable in this condition.May suit someone wanting to tinker with it or do an engine swap? due to lack of money ,we have not had a mechanic look at it ,vehicle is in good condition otherwise & has sidesteps fitted.
