The creamy white 1964 car presented here is an original example of the Fiat 1500 Cabriolet styled by the world-renowned Italian automotive design house Pininfarina.
Launched in 1960 and produced into 1967, the Fiat 1500 Pininfarina Cabriolet is a two-passenger sports convertible—a type Europeans commonly call a "spider". The car's elegantly clean form is evocative of the Pininfarina-designed 1957 Fiat 1200 Tv, a diminutive convertible that brought "jet-age" modern styling to the period's Fiat 1200 chassis. The styling was also used by Ferrari (250 GT Series II Cabriolet), Puegoet (404 Cabriolet) and Abarth (1960 2200 Spider).
The Fiat 1500 Pininfarina Cabriolet interior features individual bucket seats for the driver and passenger. Roll-up door windows in lieu of side curtains give legitimacy to the sporty car's Cabriolet model designation, and helped to assure visibility in varied driving conditions.
Gioacchino Colombo designed the 1481cc four-cylinder Fiat engine producing 79 horsepower (SAE gross) at 6,000 rpm. It features polyspheric combustion chambers which provide better compression ratios and improved overall distribution of stresses--thus minimum wear and maximum life. The single-cam engine's 8.8:1 compression ratio and dual-choke Weber carburetor, coupled with a 4-speed manual transmission and 3.9:1 rear axle ratio, provided comparatively brisk acceleration and a top speed in excess of 90 mph.
