The GTO of course went on to become a very desirable collector's item. When Bob Lutz the chairman of General Motors announced 40 years later that GM was bringing back an updated version of the famous “Goat” it was an exciting moment for muscle car enthusiasts. The new GTO was unveiled in 2004. Built in Australia as a Holden “Monarro” the car showed itself to be a modern muscle car a good bit quicker than the original but sophisticated and comfortable and with an international flavor. The original GTO with its 350 horsepower V-8 engine was capable of blistering acceleration for the time of 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds with its 4-speed manual gearbox. The reincarnated GTO now with a 360 horsepower 5.7 litre 10.1:1 compression all aluminum V-8 engine cut that time to 5.3 seconds with its optional 6-speed Tremec manual gearbox and was able to provide a top speed electronically limited to 160 mph.
