Description

1979 Ford F250 4X4 Crew Cab
I Never thought I'd see the day, but I'm putting my cool old truck up for sale. I need to find a good home for my beloved truck for fair-market value, and I'm hopeful that my buyer will enjoy it as much as my family has. We've used it for the last 7 years to tow our 2006 18' toyhauler (approximately 7K lbs) to many cool camping destinations all over Central and Southern California (Pismo, Bass Lake, Lake Tahoe, Big Bear Lake, Lucerne Valley, etc). Now my girls have our weekends taken up with their sports, and the camping has been less and less, so we sold the trailer, and now goes this great truck that we find we just don't use anymore. This is not a show truck, but it is a very, very clean, reliable driver.
If I were bidding on this truck, my question would be “Is it reliable? Can I fly in and drive it home?” My answer is absolutely yes; do as I've done, and take this truck anywhere you please- it's never left my family stranded as we've used it on our camping trips, and I'm sure it will be good to you too (please bear in mind that it's 35 years old, and when I was 35, my body would occasionally have an ache or pain)- same is true here, be a friend to this truck and it will do all that you ask- it's in very good shape!
-I bought the truck in 2007, and over the years have added my own touches to it.. (I have paperwork/reciepts for most everything listed).
-The engine is a 460 and is bored .040 over. It is bone stock other than using a pre-smog cam (details below). I pulled the original running 400 and installed this motor in 2008, it has 21,100 total miles on it with 8 oil changes so far (break-in plus every 3K)
-New brakes all around and miscellaneous worn front end bits replaced 21K miles ago.
-The transmission has a mild shift kit that gives nice, positive shifts without being stupid neck-snapping abrupt. I don't know the mileage on the tranny, but it works flawlessly (it was mated to the 400 when I got the truck). The transfer case is a married NP205- it too is flawless.
-Front and rear diffs are stock Dana 44/60 respectively, each with 4.10 gearsets.
-Power steering and power brakes.
-Highly desirable tilt steering column
-I recently had the truck professionally painted in PPG single-stage white (I have not cut and buffed the paint, so there's a bit more 'pop' to it should you want to put the work in). This truck came from the factory in brown, a look I didn't much care for. Anyway, the body is in very nice shape, and you get to be the first to scratch it! About the body-- it is why I chose this particular truck.. I had a hard time finding a crew with little/no rust.. I replaced 2 rusted areas in the driver and passenger footwells (each about a square foot in size), and I replaced the lower rear corners of the bed (near the rear bumper) due to rust where mud gets trapped (about 7x 5” on each side). The rest of the body is quite nice- all OEM sheetmetal.
-New bed liner (paint-in type)
-New windshield and gasket (I dropped the old window when taking it out for paint).
-Dealer A/C.. If you're familiar with what Ford did, “Dealer A/C” means virtually all of the bulky A/C stuff' is up under the dash and out of the engine bay (“factory A/C” has a huge unit beside the engine). I had new lines made, and it has been converted to R34. Sadly, it still needs finishing (see 'not so good' below)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique for this particular truck, and not found on most other dent side crews;
-Airbag overload springs; makes balancing the load/ trailer very easy
-Power/Remote door locks; by far the most convenient upgrade I've made to the truck- after being spoiled by this feature on late model cars, I thought my classic Ford would do well to have it too- you'll love it!
-Late-model “Crank Down” spare tire carrier- I sourced this from an early 90's Chevy p/u.. it allows you to retrieve the fulll-size spare without getting under the truck- it's concealed/accessed behind the custom flip-down rear plate.. very clean and functional (yet in all these years I've never had to use it!).
-An Econline Steering wheel- The stock wheel comes with the truck too, but I swapped in an early 80's Ford Econline van wheel because it offers a thicker rim, which just feels better to me.. easy enough to swap out if you don't agree, and a detail that most won't ever notice.
-Hidden Kill Switch- I'm always a little paranoid that some dummy-head thief loves odd old trucks as much as me, so I wired in a secret kill switch.
-”New” wiring harness (complete).. Google “Centech” and you'll find they make an OEM style harness for this model/make/year (as well as many others).. I went this route because some previous owner(s) had just too many splices and dead ends in the original harness.. I had the truck apart anyway, so it was just as easy to totally remove the original and install this upgraded harness (it's pretty nice- uses all oem-style plugs/switches with a “modern” fuse block- no more fusable links or old school glass fuses.
-It is 50-state legal.. I shipped this truck down from Grant's Pass Oregon when I bought it, and California made me go to great lengths to make it smog legal.. this is good if you are my buyer and live in California, but very honestly, if you are an out of state buyer, if I were you I'd take off every last bit of smog equipment, stuff it in the attic, and not look back- I believe that as powerful and torquey as this 460 is, that it would just run and perform much better if it were allowed breathe (I have to imagine that if you're a 'save the planet' type that this truck isn't your cup of tea anyway!)
-It has “Straight up” cam timing.. On the advice of the engine builder, instead of going with an “RV” cam to increase torque, he suggested I go with a pre-1970 OEM Ford cam that has the same lift, but is timed straight up (which really means non-smog cam).. I'm glad I did- the engine is quite stout, and still easily passes smog (google 460 straight up timing or troll the Ford forums for more info on this).
-White Face Guages- Some purists might not like this touch, but I think it flows really well with the white dash.
-7-Way “RV” style trailer wiring- Because this truck has been used as a truck (as I hope you too will use it), I wired in a 7-way round plug that will work for virtually any trailer you might tow (although you'll of course need a plug in adapter if you're going with a 4 or 5 wire type trailer wiring).
-A Prodigy brake controller and 10K hitch receiver with load leveling bars are included with the truck.
-Rear “In-Bumper” lights.. these are on their own toggle, and work very well as a light source if you're hooking up a trailer in the dark.
-Bed Rail protectors.. Although the top of the bed rails and tailgate are perfect, I used these aluminum protectors/covers as a bit of insurance- If they're not your style, they're easy to remove, and the truck looks great without them.
-Stereo- this is not a top of the line system, but it is pretty nice for a truck. (4) 6” speakers wired directly (no amp) to a CD/AM-FM head unit with a removable face.. If you're an audiophile you'll need more, but I think most people would be pretty happy with it.
-A drain plug for the C6- Kind of a minor thing, until you pull the tranny pan to change the filter- what a mess! When I changed the fluid and filter and fluid last (21,000 miles ago), I welded in a bung for a drainplug- you'll get the benefit of a much less messy job than when I did it!
-Finally, I've included a letter from Ford detailing this truck's original specs and options as new. I did this because I found that when I went searching for this rare truck, I came across several sellers that that had cobbled together what I wanted (a 4x4 crew).. I wanted to be sure this truck was not a converted 2wd to 4wd, or some other combination, and this letter helps address that concern (I also thought it was cool that Ford gave me the time of day as I sought info on a truck they sold 3 decades ago!).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now for the not-so-good
-There are a few “weeping” leaks that might bother you.. one is the rear diff pinion seal.. it's minor enough that I haven't chased it down, but I've got the new seal in my tool box for the day I get upset enough to change it out (so far that day hasn't come). Another nagging/weeping leak is at the transmission pan.. again, not enough to warrant a do-it-now repair, so I haven't done it yet.. these are not puddle makers, just the type that leave a drop every so often..
-The Pro Comp tires (size 315/75R16) are about 50% used up.
-While the front end is nice and tight (I went through it 21K ago and replaced the worn/needed items), you might look at the front leaf spring bushings- I get an odd groan once and again while doing u-turns.. I know it's not the front u-joints, and I'm thinking the spring bushings are dry and/or worn.
-The AC system likely needs a new compressor (?). It's got dealer air, and all components work (the compressor clutch engages when switched on, the interior fan (squirrel cage) works at all speeds, I've had new lines made, I've converted it to R34, and yet it doesn't blow cold. Honestly I'm over my head on this one, and short of putting it in an A/C shop, I'm at a loss. Experience tells me it's either the temp/select switch, or the compressor (230.00 at rockauto.com). Either way, I figure I'll take my hit on the selling price rather than sort this one (my wife had a vote in this approach).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've tried to be as thorough and honest as possible- this truck is rare enough that I know my buyer will likely be from far away and will have many questions.
If you have any questions, or need any specific pictures of the truck, give a call. Also, please know that I have this truck listed locally and on a few forums, and I reserve the right to end the auction should it sell. Dean @ 661-332-6568
--If you win the auction, I need a 500.00 Paypal deposit within 2 business days (the balance of the cost will be paid with cash/cashier's check).
--If you can, please get a PPI or come and see the truck and test drive it personally before you win the auction.. It's located in the 93312 area code, which is about 2 hours north of Los Angeles, CA. I want my buyer to get this thing with eyes wide open and have no disappointments- it only works if we both feel good about the deal.
--If you have no/negative feedback reach out to me and get me in person or else I'll need to cancel your bid -I don't suffer fools very well- please don't bid unless this truck speaks to you and you can pay for it.
--If you win and must ship it, the shipping is of course on you, but I will make myself available to your driver whenever his/her schedule allows for pickup (I've shipped a few cars myself over the years and will be as helpful as I can to make it work for you and your driver).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At the risk of making myself sound like a jerk, please know that I know full well what this truck is- it took me almost a year to find it when I started looking in 2006. Having said that, it's my opinion that while these crew cabs are rare, they're not crazy-rare; it's not like Ford only cranked out a few dozen.. What IS rare, however, is to find one that hasn't rusted away, and is an actual clean, rot-free driver like this one. I'm not in a bind, and I'm not desperate to sell; If you’re a dealer or a lowball flipper, there’s likely a better mark for you somewhere else.

Good luck- even if not mine, I hope you find a classic Ford crew that's right for you- they're such cool trucks, and they really stand out in a sea of modern look-alike vehicles always compliments when you drive one of these.
