Description

So the time has come to say goodbye to "Ellie Mae" (the name my daughter gave this car!). My daughter is away in college and Ellie Mae needs to find another owner. I don't want to see it just rot into the ground, so its for sale. It is a 1994 with 173,xxx miles on it. Runs great to tell you the truth. But as with any car there is the Good and Bad (or at least, not so good!). So here they are as best as I can tell you:
Good
1. Electric top works fine
2. Engine runs great - really, it does! Starts every time, no knocking or ticking - 3.8 V6s are good motors.
3. Interior is pretty clean - no rips or tears. Grey Cloth.
4. FUN, FUN, FUN car to run to the beach or anywhere!
5. Tires are pretty good - probably around 15k on them.
6. No real rust to speak of.
Not so Good!
1. Transmission (and its been like this since I bought it 3 years and 15000+/- miles ago) is a little sticky. It goes into drive and reverse with no issues whatsoever. However, after the car is warm (usually has no problem when you first start going), it doesn't want to easily shift into second. You basically start accelerating and then when its time to shift you have to let up on the gas just a little bit & it falls right into second. From then on its fine. Its quirky and we just always dealt with it. It has not gotten any worse since we bought it and all cheap used cars have some kind of quirk!
2. It has a slight bladder control issue (it leaks some fluids). It always has since we have had it. I just keep an eye on them & add a little when needed. Its not like it floods your garage or anything, but if you put it in a garage, you are going to want some cardboard down.
3. Top has a few places of concern. It doesn't leak - but it will start to because of the holes - which can be patched, but eventually you are going to want a new top.
4. Paint is faded & clearcoat is coming off on the rear. Doesn't look bad cleaned up, but it needs a paint job if you wanted it to look nice.
5. Drivers door creaks where someone backed into my daughter ever so lightly at Royal Farms, but enough to make the door creak when you open it. Could possibly be adjusted to be fixed, but it has never been a big deal to us.
6. Needs a new fuel hose from the filler to the tank. If you fill the tank completely full, it will drip a little out of the filler hose. Solution for the last 3 years - don't fill it over 3/4 & no big deal. Probably a cheap fix, but never a real issue for us.
7. Passenger rear bumper has a piece torn off on the right rear wheel well. It was like this when we bought it.
8. Suspension has 20 years and 173,000 miles on it. Sometimes it creaks & groans - sometimes it doesn't. Probably could use new ball joints & possibly shocks to make it 100% right - again - no big deal to us.
9. It will probably need a battery. It has been sitting over the winter and starts right up with a jump box but I don't know if the battery will hold a charge or not - so plan on a battery.
10. I forgot to mention that the A/C does not work. Shortly after we bought it, the bearing went bad in the compressor. I put a used compressor on it, but did not change the Orings & it never held a charge. But, hey - its a convertible!! Who needs A/C!!
And that's about the whole story. We bought it from a Ford dealer in New Jersey off of Ebay. It was a one owner car that a school teacher owned & she had it serviced at that dealer and traded in at that dealer (which is why they sold it with close to 160,000 miles on it when we bought it). It is not perfect, but it is a fun, fun car that still has a lot of miles left in it.
I have toyed around with the idea of keeping it & fixing it up- maybe hot-rodding the V6 or even dropping a 5.0 in it, but I am kidding myself thinking I have that kind of time - its not going to happen!
I think the tags may still be good and being held at DMV (for Delaware buyers). I cant remember when it was tagged thru, but we dropped the insurance and turned in the tags when my daughter away went to college.
Bottom line - its a good little cheap car that you can drop the top on! It is for sale locally, so I reserve the right to end the auction early. If you are really interested, email me and we can talk. More pics if you want them.
Thanks for looking.
Bob
