Description

Hello fellow Honda enthusiast, here for sale is my 1991 Honda CRX SI. You can call it restored or original if you would like, both sort of apply, but I will get into that later. I have over 100 pictures and videos on my Google Drive if you would like to follow the link and check it out, here it is:
am technically the third owner but second to hold the title in my name. I have known both owners and this car for nearly 15 years now, though I have only owned it for a little over a year. The first owner purchased it when he was 50 years old - him and his wife drove it regularly around town, to and from church, and taking their granddaughter (the second owner) to school and various other events as she grew up. She eventually took possession of it as her first car and drove it to school, work, etc.. She ended up moving after having driven it for 6 years where she left it at her grandparents house (first owners). It sat there for a few years mostly un-driven but taken care of until I purchased it. My plan was to get it looking and driving back to its former glory (as it had weathered quite a bit under the Arizona sun), and then bring it to her after a few years since she is one of my long time best friends. Unfortunately I am moving and neither of us have the space, so here it is, ready for your time, care, and enjoyment.
Now that you have its history, lets talk about the car. It was purchased in south Arizona and remained there until early 2020 when I drove it to Michigan. I havent driven it during the winter so it is still, completely rust free. For the restoration mentioned in the opening statement, we carried that out around 4 years ago. As you may be familiar, Arizona is not nice to paint, plastic, and fabric. The second owners drive to work was 45 minutes, then for it to sit outside under the sun for 8-10 hours, and drive back, I am sure you can see the potential for sun damage there. Just about every seal was replaced with genuine Honda stuff, it got new carpet along with re-upholstered seats and headliner to match its original Type K Off-Black interior color, and a Rio Red R-63 color matched paintjob in Basecoat/Clearcoat ppg stuff. Some parts which couldnt be replaced or re-done as original as possible were replaced from another 1991 CRX SI donor car, these items include the sun visors, rear speaker covers, gauge cluster, and cowl vent cover. The marker lights are aftermarket reproductions, the stereo and speakers, and the custom floor mats.
A few words, the second owner because of her long commute got the stereo for bluetooth (I heard all about it, she was excited), and the gauge cluster being one of the few parts that were replaced not due to sun damage, reads 110k miles. Actual mileage is 175k right now: a Master Tech looked at it while it was in the car and could not diagnose the issue, recommended I take it to a Honda dealership, I took the cluster to a local dealership and although they figured out the issue, reproduction parts were no longer being made so it was un-fixable. I ended up stumbling across that donor 91 CRX SI mentioned above where I was able to get those much needed parts from.
Before I made the drive out to Michigan, it got four new Sumitomo brand tires, new fluids everywhere, spark plugs, a windshield, and vented rotors and ceramic pads at all four corners which were the only 'upgrade-like' parts applied. Everything else is original to the vehicle, unmolested U.S. spec Japanese-made Honda parts. The drivetrain is all original and untouched from the spark plug wires, to the starter, to the A.C. compressor, windshield wiper motor, fuses, plastics, transmission, CV axles, etc.. The suspension is original too, from the shocks to the mounts to the coils. The only non-original aspect of the drivetrain and suspension and brakes (aside from the rotors and pads) is parts of the exhaust which were replaced with original reproduction parts (the tips have slip-ons to help fill the gap, but they can be removed if chosen).
To break it down, this is an original car that has had only the parts replaced that went bad from the sun or time and with those parts being replaced or work carried out, an effort was made on cleaning it up and making it look nice.
But, being a 30 year old car, it is not perfect. There are a few scrapes and scuffs on the door panels and other interior trim pieces, bubbling in the sunroof panel between the vinyl and backing, the HVAC unit as a crack and now it has a metal plate covering to prevent it from cracking further and make it look better, the speakers sound 'tingy', the door ajar switch on the passenger side sometimes reads inaccurately, there is a small paint chip on the front bumper and two small dents on the passenger side door and roof, scratches on the bottom black trim piece below fuel door, the suspension is a bit worn out but works well enough, the A.C. blows well but could use a recharge (R-12 is expensive), and the information decal on the air box has a piece missing from pressure washing. I took pictures of these issues on the drive link above. It is missing a fog light as well - I affectionately named this car, "One-Eyed Jack" and have such, not really been interested in locating another light. If you want to keep it the way it is, I can tell you the fog light story.
Although this is a beautiful example of the highly sought after 91 SI cars, this is still a driver. I drive it most places I go in the summer months, it is a joy. Averages almost 40mpg with its 9 gallon tank, gets up to speed perfectly fine, no weird sounds or functions, suspension is a little rough on these awful Michigan roads but it makes for enjoyable dodging exercises. Another great aspect of this car is that although mostly original, it has been restored and regularly driven, so it isnt going to have all those issues an un-restored 30 year old car or one with extremely low miles will likely have. Included in the sale is the original floor mats in rather good condition and the original manual/warranty information and maintenance receipts. Timing belt was replaced at 90k in 2001 during a major annual service for example.
I am putting this up for sale for a week, I have a few weeks until I move. If it doesnt sell, I will figure something out and wont consider selling it again. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to ask! I know quite a bit of this cars history, it has been in my life for 15 years, nearly all of the second owners, and I am in communication with the original owner who is my friend and second owners grandpa and has had the title for 29 years. If you need me to take more pictures or videos of something, I can do that too. If you want me to ship it, I will but at your expense and effort. Bank-to-Bank wire transfers, cash, and certified cashiers check all work. Title is in my name and clean/clear with "Box A, Actual Mileage" - I will notarize it once sale is confirmed, may need a day or two to handle that. I am quite busy, but am willing to meet with it locally for serious buyers, I am in Detroit. Thanks for reading.
