Description

Standard Features3.5L Inline-6, DOHC, 12-valve, triple Weber carburetors, 220hp Double wishbone front suspension Gauges (Water, Fuel, Oil Pressure)Power Windows Radio AM 101*1806 was, according to the Maserati Certificate of Origin, completed in September 1961. Originally White it was deliveredironically to a Signore Albino. There is currently no documentationavailable regarding when or by whom it was imported into the UnitedStates. In March of 1980 the car was in Seattle and had been partiallystripped as a donor car for another project. Mr. Selby a mechanicalengineer and commercial airline pilot purchased the car and an extensivesupply of spare parts and brought the car to Vancouver. The car sat for10 years before Mr. Selby could complete a proper restoration shop andbegin the 8 year process of bringing 1806 back to life. This was ameticulous restoration documented with over 400 photos of the entireprocess.

A rotisserie was custom built to accommodate the body and chassiswelding and reconstruction process. All floorboards, trunk andbattery-box panels, the sheet metal box-beam sills and corroded tubingwere replaced. Finally the whole structure was rust proofed and givenseveral coats of epoxy primer. Two years was spent on this process.
The body was repaired, refitted and made into an integral structureusing the traditional methods. Substituting modern materials withoutdetracting from originality enhanced the corrosion resistance.Thepreliminary body prep was then done, including re-coating the entireunderside of the skin with tar after the fashion of the original“Superleggera” construction.

With the body mounted on a set of trestles atop a castered dolly therefurbished suspension and fuel tank were installed and new systemsaccessories such as fuel and brake lines, and battery cable, whichpasses through the chassis to the trunk cavity, were added.

The engine was rebuilt using the best components from several boxes ofparts from three or four engines which came with the purchase. Newpistons, rings, pins, bearings, seals and gaskets went into a pristineblock after all reciprocating components had been magnafluxed andbalanced. The Webers were stripped to bare castings and thenglass-beaded to new condition and all internal components were replaced. The number of the engine block in the car is 1188. The block that wasin the car when acquired in 1980 was number 1041 and has sump number1036.AM*101*1806 is listed as having engine number 101*1806 howeverthere are no Maserati records to confirm this. It is believed that ofthe engines were numbered consecutively and since all of the coupes hadeven numbers (making 1806 the 903rd coupe built - spyders were all oddnumbered) engines in the 850 to 1100 range would probably have beenavailable for this car and making engine 1188 certainly period correct.

The aluminum rims required welding and refinishing and upon completionMr. Selby was able to choose the five immaculate wheels which are on thecar and then mounted new Pirelli Cinturato restoration tires on them.

The car entered the car in its first show in Vancouver in 1998 where itwon "Best Debuting Restoration" and was voted the "Show Favourite" bythe spectators. It has taken top class honours in every show in which ithas been judged for prizes except one, in which it was judged against adozen other 1st place winners and took second to a professionallyrestored boat-tail Auburn. 1806 was taken to Pebble Beach for theMaserati 100th Anniversary and participated in the Concorso where theonly thing the car was criticized for was an incorrect shift knob whichhas since been replaced by the correct NOS piece.

Since restoration and under the current owner the car has always beenstored in a heated garage and shows as new. The car is a pleasure todrive starting first time and all components functioning smoothly. Thiswas borne out by a couple of spirited laps at Monterey during theConcorso.
