1953 Standard Vanguard Ute - Grease Lightning
There were around 1100 utes made from 1947 - 1953 and there would only be a handful left on the road. The 1953 is a "Phase 2" and it is the nicest looking model.
We rebuilt and painted it about 15 years ago as a promotional vehicle for my business, but workers don't care, and it has been dented, scratched and paint chips. From 30 feet, it looks ok and is a real head turner, but when you get up close, the scratches, dents and paint chips are noticeable. It needs repairing and repainting if you want it to be a real glamour. However, as a promo vehicle, it turns heads whenever it drives by, and people look at the signwriting.
The flames are House of Color Holographic Flake and it was painted with 2 pack polyurethane paint, but the paint is showing its age.
It is modified:
2.0 litre Isuzu (Rodeo) Engine, stage 3 cam, 5 speed manual, 4.8:1 diff gears, extractors and sports exhaust, HR Front end with HZ Disc brakes, Commodore steering rack, collapsible steering column, lowered suspension, chrome mag wheels, MR2 bucket seats, etc.
It has been Engineered and the Engineers Report comes with the ute.
It has some original paperwork from when it was purchased new in 1953, workshop manuals, and photocopies of the sales brochures from the day. The original owner lived at Mumbil, near Wellington and he kept it until they took his license off him when he reached 87 years old.
One of my workers decided to tidy up the wiring, so he removed the stereo and that was about as far as he got, but at the moment the dash lights, speedo, fuel gauge, wipers and stereo aren't working. Being an old car the wiring is pretty easy, but we just haven't had the time.
It is registered until 6th September 2014 and it is registered business use, so you may get a small refund from the RTA and Green Slip if it is registered Private.
We only drive it from inside the workshop to outside the workshop each day, and sometimes it gets a run to Campbelltown.
The ute drives much better than when it was stock standard. The new front end and power assisted disc brakes make it steer, handle and stop a lot better. It starts, it stops, the blinkers, tail lights and headlights all work. It has a thermo fan, and because it has the old copper radiator it rarely gets to half way on the temperature gauge. We run it on BP 98 octane fuel and it goes well.
The speedo and odometer are not working. It has 99226 miles on it, and has done for years. It is lucky to travel 500km pa and most of this is in and out of the workshop and up to the petrol station for fuel.
