HISTORY OF ALFA 33. In 1971 Alfa Romeo started production of the AlfaSud, a car which been in their thinking since the 1950's. It was a small lightweight front wheel drive sports car which was simple in construction (compared with all other Alfas) and very straight forward in maintenance. Despite this, it had sophisticated suspension, revolutionary 1.1 litre boxer engine (which increased in size with the passage of time) and very low overall centre of gravity. The combination of these factors made it very popular as a sports car and even in racing and Alfa Romeo went on to produce in excess of 1 million of these little cars including Sprint version. In 1983 Alfa Romeo continued the design with the ALFA 33 , based on the same floorpan, chassis and mechanicals as the AlfaSud but with modifications to further simplify maintenance (eg simplification of the braking system). More importantly, the boxer engine was further developed to develop mor power . The Alfa 33 was produced from 1983 to 1994 so that in all, the series had been in production from 1971 to 1995, allowing almost a quarter of a century of development and a total production of approx. 2 million vehicles.
The only two problems associated with the AlfaSud and Alfa 33 were body rust and cheaply sourced electrics. The first of these problems was solved totally 1n 1989 when the bodies used a different steel and were fully galvanized. The second problem involves enthusiast owners to sort the rather simple electrics to function correctly ( there is not much to the electrics, no computers except for fuel injection and no fancy electronics).
MY CAR IS ALMOST THE LAST CAR OF THE FIRST SERIES OF ALFA 33's (nicest body shape in my opinion) WITH THE FULLY GALVANIZED BODY AND THE FUEL INJECTED 1.7litre ENGINE.
. IT HAS SPENT MOST OF ITS TIME IN MY OWNERSHIP (3 years) IN THE WORKSHOP BEING STRIPPED OF ALL ITS INTERIOR TRIM AND EXTERIOR TRIM, WHICH HAS BEEN BEEN PROGRESSIVELY RECONDITIONED OR RENEWED OR RESPRAYED BEFORE REFITTING. PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORDS INCLUDED WITH SALE SHOW THAT THERE IS NO RUST ANYWHERE, INCLUDING INSIDE OF PANELS.
. ATTENTION WAS THEN TURNED TO MECHANICALS. I HAVE RECONDITIONED OR RENEWED ANYTHING THAT I COULD FAULT, WHICH INCLUDES THE TOTAL BRAKING SYSTEM (RECON. MASTER CYLINDER AND CALIPERS, MACHINED DISCS, NEW REAR WHEEL CYLINDERS, NEW REAR BRAKE SHOES, NEW DISC PADS, NEW HANDBRAKE CABLES) , PARTIAL EXHAUST SYSTEM (previous owner), CV JOINT BOOTS, NEW WATER PUMP, NEW COOLING HOSES, SERVICING OF RADIATOR(previous owner), NEW TYRES, NEW 'BOGE' SHOCK ABSORBERS(previous owner), NEW REAR WHEEL BEARINGS.
. ATTENTION WAS THEN TURNED TO ELECTRICS. I HAVE FITTED BRAND NEW TAILLIGHT ASSYS, INSTRUMENT PANEL HAS BEEN REMOVED AND RECONDITIONED, , ONE REPLACEMENT CONTROL STALK FITTED, LIGHTS AND SWITCHES SERVICED, WIRING LOOM CHECKED AND SERVICED AS REQUIRED, CENTRAL LOCKING COMPLETELY RENEWED .
. ACCESSORIES WERE THEN FITTED NEW RADIO/CD (with new speakers), NEW PERIOD FLEXIBLE STALK MAPLIGHT, NEW REVERSING CAMERA, NEW AUXILIARY FUSEBOX, NEW EXTERNAL BADGING.
. FINALLY, A MAJOR 160,000KM SERVICE HAS JUST BEEN DONE, WHICH INCLUDES RENEWAL OF ALL FLUIDS (ENGINE OIL/ TRANSMISSION OIL, COOLANT, BRAKE AND CLUTCH FLUID), RENEWAL OF CAMSHAFT DRIVEBELTS, NEW BATTERY AND FINAL DETAILING OF ENGINE BAY AND SUSPENSION.
THE CAR IS POSITIVELY BEAUTIFUL WITH ENGINE AND GEARBOX PERFORMING PERFECTLY, PAINTWORK GLEAMING WITH NO DAMAGE ANYWHERE, INTERIOR IN PERFECT CONDITION AND THE CAR HAS ONLY TRAVELLED A TOTAL OF 171,240km . (it had done 163,600km at purchase 3 years ago)
IT HAS WONDERFUL PERFORMANCE WITH THE CHARACTERISTIC ALFA EXHAUST GROWL THAT YOU DON'T GET WITH MODERN ALFA'S.
ONLY THING OF ANY CONSEQUENCE NOT ATTENDED TO IS THE HEATER FAN MOTOR MOTOR.

An additional note for purchasers : although vehicle is listed without air conditioning, it is actually fitted and I have removed the compressor, condensors & fans. They have been sealed and stored and are included with the sale.
SO, IF YOU WANT AN ALFA 33 AND DO NOT HAVE THE TIME OR MONEY TO BRING ONE UP TO THE STANDARD YOU WOULD LIKE, THEN WHY BOTHER BUY AND RESTORE WHEN YOU CAN HAVE MINE. THE ASKING PRICE DOES NOT REFLECT THE MONEY SPENT ON IT AND YOU GET HUNDREDS OF HOURS OF DETAILED RESTORATION WORK FOR FREE.
THE ONLY REASON I AM SELLING IS THAT A RECENT ACCIDENT MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO DRIVE A MANUAL CAR !
