Ultra-efficient fuel economy and emissionsComes with lots of energy-saving technologyBand A for road tax so no charge for first yearThe BMW 320d EfficientDynamics is the best choice of the 3 Series range for low running costs in every respect, and is also one of the most popular models across the range as a whole. It can achieve fuel economy of 69mpg on average, which means an estimated fuel cost, based on most recent data, of £936 per 10,000 miles. It’s also more efficient than its main rivals such as the Audi A4 2.0 TDIe and Mercedes-Benz C-Class 220CDi, which achieve 65.7mpg and 64.2mpg respectively.
Excellent CO2 emissions figures of 109g/km mean it qualifies for low, low Band A road tax – free for the first year and £20 every 12 months after that. It’s a good choice for business drivers too, slotting into the 15% BIK company car tax band.
Its economy and emissions figures are the same whether you opt for the manual or automatic gearbox, although the prices do differ: £28,080 for the manual and £29,605 for the automatic respectively. The ‘BluePerformance’ specification, which adds heavier-duty filters and converters to further reduce emissions, is available on manual cars only.
EfficientDynamics means various energy-saving measures such as a Stop/Start system, ‘ECO PRO’ mode (a driving mode which helps save fuel by setting throttle response, gearchange lights and air conditioning to be at their most efficient) and a Brake Energy Regeneration system, which uses energy from deceleration to charge the battery rather than constantly using the engine.
Despite its frugality, the car still has a more than respectable turn of pace, polishing off the 0-62mph dash in 7.7 seconds.
As an EfficientDynamics model, it’s available with 16-inch alloy wheels only. It’s not possible to spec it with more showy larger wheels as the smaller diameter helps it hit the numbers for fuel economy and CO2 emissions. Other than the wheels, it’s very similar to the ES trim level which includes cruise control and Bluetooth as standard
