Description
Hello All,
Up for sale today is this stellar example of German engineering; the time has come to part ways as I am off to Canada in September. First I'll hand you a bit of history - this car was first purchased by a doctor for his wife who managed to bump the rear bumper bar in the first few years of owning it so he installed a tow bar as a warning system for her not to repeat the event. The car itself has not towed anything of any weight; the most this tow bar would have carried is a bike rack. The second owner purchased it from his friend after the first owner had upgraded (approximately 2009) and proceeded to store the car with the intent of converting it to a historic vehicle when it came of age (2014); unfortunately the second owner died early 2014 and his wife was stuck with the car. Due to her not driving manual, she listed the car for sale on the BMW club website where I came across it in June 2014. The above history is as per her word.
So let's get down to details:
THE GOOD:
* Car is in complete and original condition aside from the aftermarket CD player. The bucket seats, body colour, carpets, toolkit and motor are all authentic and match the car's history
* This example is a genuine Australian stock BMW 528i Motorsport in metallic silver and dark grey interior with factory front and rear spoilers and fog lights
* Original motor, gearbox, M-spec steering wheel, gear knob and 14" BBS alloys (two new Yoko tyres); original dealer books also come with the car
* Aftermarket but matching spec exhaust gives the car free flowing breathing
* Panels are very straight and are all original for the car
* NRMA bases minimum cost of replacement at $5,040 based on rarity in Australia
THE BAD (will need attention):
* The car has very recently developed an issue with the left hand lighting; the rear driving lights stopped working after heavy downpour during March/April and when they returned to working, the front driving light stopped. I can't understand the issue but my guess is that moisture has entered the circuit on the left side and is being a bit of a gremlin.
* Approximately 3 months ago the car started puffing blue smoke on the first gear; Peak Performance in Parramatta was consulted and their diagnosis was that the stem seals would need replacement within a year with regular driving - my own driving is less than 5000km per year so this is over four years away. There is no loss in performance, only thing to look out for is the engine oil level every few months to ensure it is replenished.
THE UGLY (non-vital):
* Minor rust is forming in common E28 shape problem areas including the bottom of the rear window - currently there is a small bud of rust that's formed since approx December 2014 however there is no rust in the doors, boot or engine bay
* A chip in the windscreen in front of the driver
* Odd paint blemishes/scratches that come with the age of such cars
* Rear driver side window has come loose from its guide (stays up) but sinks one centimetre every few weeks. Given the way the door lip hangs overhead, no water normally enters unless it comes in sideways
* Heat foam has disintegrated completely from the inside of the bonnet
* Steering wheel leather has disintegrated in some areas/some stitching has come loose - this has been covered with an aftermarket grip-style steering cover
* I have a guess that the car had an immobilizer at some point in its life and it appears that the central locking may have been interfered with it; wires to this system were discovered to be cut when I opened the boot to replace an indicator bulb. The car doesn't have central locking or power windows and I had purchased it assuming it didn't to begin with; no effect to the car whatsoever
WORK COMPLETED:
* Removal of hard suspension parts and replaced with model appropriate components
* Replaced front shock absorbers
Not much else was required over the course of the last year of ownership - my plan was to clean up the car and bring it closer to factory standard however my wedding in Canada for September sort of stopped that process early on this year. Living near a train station makes using the car for anything but the odd trip to see friends etc less than likely - in which case I borrow my brother's car. As such the car doesn't get much use and I'd rather see it go to an enthusiast than simply sit covered up in the drive-way.
As always, this is a car after all and no matter how many photos are taken, it is best to come and see it in person. I'm available most weekends and perhaps some weeknights but given the short days, there isn't much light so I would recommend weekends. I've tried to be as thorough as possible with this listing but questions are encouraged - I'll do my best to answer them.
