1932 Buick Model 55 Sport Phaeton. Extremely rare 1 of 2 known examples with coachwork by Holden Motor Body Builder's Ltd. One of the rarest Buick's ever produced of the 56,790 total produced in 1932 only 106 (69 US spec and 37 export) Model 55 Sport Phaeton's were produced.
In addition to its sporty folding windshield, the Model 55 was factory deluxe-equipped with dual side-mounted spare tires and a rear luggage rack, fitted here with an accessory trunk. Adjustable ride control and dual horns were also standard. Buyers could choose wood or, the wire-spoke wheels found on the offered car.
This Buick is additionally equipped with dual driving lamps, taillights and wind-wings. There are even dual clocks—one dash-mounted and the other cut into the rearview mirror (a placement prevalent at the time). Period décor accessories include an art-deco style radiator ornament and a most remarkable pair of sidemount mirrors, mounted atop beautifully sculpted figural bases.
An 82hp Buick overhead valve straight-eight engine powers the Model 55. The three-speed manual transmission provides "Syncro-Mesh" shifting, introduced to Buicks only one year before.
This Sport Phaeton was held for forty years in a private Quebec collection prior to its acquisition by the Blackhawk Collection in 2006 and purchased by its current owner in 2010. The well-preserved car had previously been converted from RHD to LHD and was free of rust damage. A restoration was completed in 2007, during which the engine and driveline were returned "to excellent touring condition." In addition to a new interior, a set of side curtains for inclement weather were made.
The Buick Club of America roster lists but a single additional surviving Model 55, located in Australia. The combination of style, rarity and condition—not to mention the history—embodied in this splendid open Buick makes it a wonderful representative of one of the marque's most admired production years.
This example shows, runs and drives very well. And would make a great addition to any museum or collection. It has been part of one of the best private collections in the country for the past 12 years and is ready for its next caretaker.
