Description

Frame off restoration of a 1937 Buick Special. Over $70,000 spent to bring this beauty back to life. Custom upholstery. Mostly original but modified with 700 R4 automatic transmission and a few other things like air conditioning and a Pioneer stereo system with remote controller, amplifier and Pioneer 6 disc CD player. Front door windows have original window crank but are now electric windows. Battery charger installed in frame to keep battery fully charged at all times when not driving. Just plug it in when you get home. Electric fan in engine compartment to keep engine cool. Original straight 8 engine. Tinted windows. Show stopper paint color makes this car a head turner wherever we go.I want to make clear ANY and ALL issues with the car. The RPM gauge isn’t working (fuse?) Gas gauge works but not sure of accuracy. Electric front windows are operated by original crank handles. People have tried to roll windows down by cranking instead of just moving crank up or down. Windows still work but sometimes you need to jiggle crank. Main seal leaked so had it replaced. Still leaks. Was told they all leak. Very, very little but it does leak. So little in fact that I haven’t had to add oil. Everything else about the car works fine. Lights, turn signals, gauges, horn, AC, radio, clock, etc I have a 3 ring binder with pictures of the frame off restoration and around 5 boxes of original parts that were replaced. The new owner can have all if wanted.
I purchased the car about 4 years ago. I drove it home, about 45 miles, drove fine, noticed the front brakes were very hot. Took it to a car builder I know and he said it needed a larger master brake cylinder. $3000 dollars later, turns out just needed a proportioning value. The only other mechanical issue I noticed was the main seal leak. I called the company that did the restoration and they said that seal does, more often than not, leak. So I had my local mechanic look and he said lets put in a new seal. $30 part and $1000 labor later the seal still drips. Called my mechanic and he said Goggle it, they all leak. I wish he told me that before I spent the money. Regarding the seal, I believe the original restoration builder and my mechanic both used the rope seal.
More info: The straight 8 engine is the original but they added a dual carb from a 1941 Buick. When rebuilt they used Delo 400 15/40 oil which is a diesel type oil. He said he uses it in everything. I continued to use that when I had the main seal re-done. I have not had to add oil at any time during it's 600 miles it currently has so that will tell you it is a very small leak. The tires are new but not radials. A car person said the car would drive nicer if I went with radials but I never drove on the freeway, just tooling around town, so no need for radials. The car drives nice and straight down the road and has a nice turning radius but with no power steering tight places takes some effort. The 700 R4 auto transmission shifts up and down nicely. There are some other nice features too.
