For fansof Italian styling and an American powertrain, Cadillac may have answered theirwishes during the late 1980s with the Allanté. This example is one of 4,670models made in 1993, the car’s final model year, with the Northstar V-8 engineand an assortment of electronic features. This was the former car of CEO Jack Smith when new, owner’s manualsigned by Smith with inscription “I killed the car” meaning he stopped productionof the Allante current owner has had the car since 1999.
Allantébodies were designed and manufactured in Italy by Pininfarina and were shipped4,600 miles to the U.S. for final assembly with domestically manufacturedchassis and engines. Specially equipped Boeing 747s departed from Turin’sInternational Airport with 56 bodies at a time, arriving at Detroit's ColemanA. Young International Airport about three miles northeast of Cadillac's newHamtramck Assembly plant, known as the “Allanté Air Bridge.”
Finishedin Euro Red (code 47), this car’s paint and trim are in very good conditionfrom 10 feet away but up close there are minor imperfections visible at closerange. The bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is extremely neat andtidy, the battery appears new and the body-colored bumpers fit tightly to thebody.
Thisroadster wears BFGoodrich Potenza RE750 radials, size 225/60R16 at everycorner. Each tire is mounted on a factory alloy wheel. The tires and wheels areall in good, original order.
Nestledwithin the engine bay is a transversely mounted Northstar engine (code L37), aDOHC, 32-valve 4.6L V-8 with 10.3:1 compression and variable valve timing(VVT). This motor was part of the Northstar System. Other features included afour-speed electronic automatic transmission (code 4T80-E), Magnasteervariable-assist power steering system, road sensing suspension (RSS), SpeedDependent Damping Control (SD2C) and four-wheel disc brakes withBosch anti-lock (ABS). Backing up the motor is GM’s four-speed electronicallycontrolled automatic transmission (4T80-E) and a 3.71:1 final drive.
Driverconvenience features include electronic climate control, Magnasteervariable-assist power steering system, four-wheel disc brakes with Boschanti-lock (ABS), power windows, power locks, power sideview mirrors, powerseats, power mirrors and headlamp washers.
Thecar’s tan leather interior is in good, original condition. The bucket seats arein very good order. The carpet, dual-spoke steering wheel, dashboard and innerdoor liners, as well as the center console and shift lever are all decent, A/Cworks, but has a slow Freon leak. The factory Delco-Bose audio system with CDplayer is included, but inop.
Unlikethe Cadillacs of yesteryear, the Allanté utilizes a modern, road-hugging suspensiondesign. The front featured struts located by one lateral link and one trailinglink, coil springs, electronically controlled shocks and an anti-roll bar. Thissystem, called Speed Dependent Damping Control, debuted on the 1989 models andworked by firming up the suspension at 25 mph and again at 60 mph. The firmestsetting also was used when starting from a standstill until five mph. Alsointroduced in 1989 was a variable-assist steering system. The rear suspensionwas also independent, and incorporated unequal-length control arms, atoe-control link, fiberglass transverse leaf spring, electronically controlledshocks and an anti-roll bar.
Introducedin early 1992 for the 1993 model year, Allanté was scaled down to just onemodel this year. The removable 60.5-pound aluminum hardtop was now a separateoption, as well as the LCD digital instrument cluster in place of the standardanalog instruments. A pearlcoat paint option (in Flax or Canyon Yellow, withHawaiian Orchid added midyear) was available. Also optional were chromesqueeze-cast aluminum wheels. For its final model year, Allanté received the4.6 L Northstar DOHC V-8 engine. It was rated at 295 horsepower at 5,600 rpm.Torque output was 290 ft⋅lbs at4400 rpm. A new unequal-length control arm rear suspension, shared with theSeville and Eldorado, was also introduced that year. Also new for the smallCadillacs was Road Sensing Suspension, an active damper management system, andrevised disc brakes. The 1993 model used GM's Delco "Premium SymphonySound System". Other changes for the Allanté included a revisedvariable-assist power steering rack, deeper front spoiler, and single-pieceside windows, which did away with the stationary forward vent window.
The 1993Allanté was also chosen to pace the 76th Indianapolis 500, driven by BobbyUnser. There were three modified 1993 Allanté Pace Cars that had only seatbelts, lighted roll bars and air intakes modified from a stock productionAllanté, those three Allanté Pace cars were provided for the race, as well asjust 30 stock 1993 Allanté’s used as Festival/Pace Cars and 58 stock 1992Allanté Festival/Pace cars that were used by drivers and crews at the openingparade and the closing of the race. Al Unser Jr’s 1993 Allanté Festival/Pacecar was featured at both the 2012, and 2013 Keel’s & Wheel’s ConcoursD’Elegance in Seabrook, Texas, Bobby Unser was Grand Marshal in 2012, and AlUnser Jr. was Grand Marshal in 2013.
TheAllanté proved popular in Hollywood. Larry Hagman drove a silver Allanté as J.R.Ewing in the later years of the hit TV show “Dallas,” Sylvester Stallone droveone in the movie, “Tango and Cash,” and Joe Pesci drove one in one of the “LethalWeapon” movies.
The lastAllanté built was flown from Turin, Italy on July 2, 1993, and completed atDetroit-Hamtramck 14 days later. With 21,430 built, assemblies averaged just alittle more than 3,000 a year throughout the car's lifetime. Productionofficially ended on July 16, 1993.
AllAllanté models featured a fully electronic instrument and control panel, whichwas angled towards the driver, and featured no knobs or manual controls.General Motors (GM) also implemented electronic controls in its mid-to-late1980s vehicles such as the Buick Reatta, Buick Riviera and Oldsmobile ToronadoTroféo, although these vehicles included a touchscreen control panel called theGraphic Control Center (GCC), which the Allanté did not feature.
Convertiblecompetition to this Allanté in 1993 included Aston Martin’s Virage Volanté,Chevrolet’s Corvette, Excalibur’s Series V Phaeton, Jaguar’s XJS V-12convertible, Mercedes-Benz’s 500 SL, Nissan’s 300ZX and Porsche’s 911 Carrera 4Cabriolet.
