1962 CADILLAC CONVERTIBLE SERIES 62
To the highest bidder goes this fantastic example of a well maintained 56-year-old Classic Cadillac Convertible. During my brief ownership I have discovered a very interesting possibility of past celebrity ownership.
I recently purchased this beauty from a gentleman in his mid-seventies with stage four lung cancer who had owned the car for the last 7 years but was trying to tie up some loose ends before he ran out of time.
During the purchase process he did tell me that he had driven the car approximately 1000 miles (4 tanks of fuel) during his ownership. He replaced the top, the windshield and mechanical maintenance as needed along the way. He was unable to provide any detail and had very little paper trail. Actual mileage is unknown.
Once the deal was done he remembered to tell me that he was told that this car once belonged to the American actress Doris Day but couldn’t prove it.
Once I got the car home and began the process of cleaning and polishing the car, I cleaned out the glove box discovering the original Cadillac Owner’s Manual. When I opened the manual, I found handwritten on the first page: Los Angeles, CA Doris Day c/o Merry Melody May 5 62.
The data plate on the Cadillac shows a Build Date of 04A, which translates to the 1st week of April (1962). So, if the car was delivered on May 5, 1962, approximately 1 month later, that would be consistent with the normal time-frame of 1 month from “Build Date” to delivery to the new owner.
Did Doris Day own this Beautiful Classic Cadillac? If you buy this car you investigate and decide. If so, the value just went up. I’m betting she did. Oh, I also have a spare set of keys on a key chain marked “Doris Day Sherman Oaks”.
This 56-year-old survivor starts, runs, drives, shifts smooth, is a blast to drive and stops as it should. Comes with original manual, full jack set, spare tire and unused parts provided by the previous owner.
Note: you will have to adjust the fuel/air mix and possibly the timing depending on the altitude you will be operating the car at. She loves high octane fuel.
This classic is not a trailer queen and it’s not perfect. However, it has HUGE POTENTIAL and presents well and is in good to very good condition overall. This is a reliable daily driver the way it sits. You could easily take this 62 Caddy Convertible to any local or regional car show and show it with pride. It is that nice as it sits now.
Under the original trunk kit, you’ll find a solid trunk pan. As it is original albeit used and dirty, I did not peel it off for pictures. You will however, see by the pictures, a very clean and solid undercarriage. Note the floor pans and wheel drop areas of the rear quarters.
All glass is excellent. Massive chrome bumpers are very nice. Paint is good and shines very nice. Interior is used but in good condition. Tires and brakes are great. All fluids good. New plugs and wires.
The first things to do would be to put the belt back on the A/C compressor once you’ve recharged the system (can’t find freon in Denver), and replace a gear (provided in box in trunk) on the passenger vent window. Go from there as you decide. I didn’t buy it to restore it.
This car is very clean and solid. NO known rust issues anywhere. I welcome all inspections. Bring them on. If you can’t come yourself, send someone. Nothing to hide here. No disappointments.
