Engine: 355 Four Bolt Main, Lunati Rods, Forged Pistons, 461X Heads, 2:02 Manley Valves, Lunati Cam (60199 RL 798-BH), Legal Stocker Cam ground For This Engine, Aluminum Water Pump, Original "891" Dual Point Distributor, Stock Oil Pan modified to 8 Qt, Original '57 Dual Four Intake Manifold Runners Welded and them Ported to match the "X" heads, Original Style Carter WCFB Carbs, 2" Carb Spacers, Stock Valve Covers with twin Oil Fill Tubes added to each one, Original Stahl Fenderwell Headers, Original working Generator with Moroso Deep Groove Pulley, etc. At a glance this engine looks like a '57 283/270 and that's the way it is supposed to look. Transmission was built by Marv Ripes himself, of A-1 Transmissions. It is an Aluminum Powerglide with one of the rare A-1 Bellhousings that attach the aluminum 'glide to the stock '57 rear mounts. It has a deep, aluminum transmission pan on it and has an A-1 4500 stall convertor, Hurst Shifter, Trans Cooler, etc.
Rear End is a stock '57 housing, 4:88 Posi, and a reinforcement strap on the left cap, just as they did in the '60's. It also has a set of home made traction bars and uses stock type 5 leaf rear springs and 50/50 rear shocks.
Front suspension consists of Lakewood 90/10 shocks, Moroso front coil springs, 2" ball joint spacers, and uses Praise Dyno Company cryogenically treated brake shoes on all corners (it slows and stops very well).
Other '60's era speed parts include; Hurst Line Loc, Cool Can, Vintage Sun Tach and Gauges, Stewart Warner 240-A electric Fuel Pump, and has a newer NHRA legal seat belt.
The interior consists of a pair of original Sedan Delivery Bucket seats recovered in simple black cloth and black vinyl, black vinyl door panels, black headliner, original style black front rubber floor mat, varnished 3/4" plywood cargo area that was done sometime in the early '70's, black dash (with green insert left intact from it's original days as a Junior Stocker) with the correct radio and clock deletes, Metalflake Superior 500 steering wheel witha NOS Ansen installation kit, etc.
All windows are Glass and I recently pulled the windshield out and installed a new correct rubber and the correct stainless trim. Wheels are original 15"x4" Cragars in the front with Moroso tires and new 15"x6" Cragars in the rear with a new, reproduction set of M&H Racemaster slicks.
The body is all steel and it still has it's original quarters, doors, fenders, liftgate, roof, hood, floors, rockers, braces, etc. A couple of the brace ends are showing their age but this is not a show car. There are trace amounts of filler in the body, but nothing that is bad at all. The chrome parts of the car are a mixture of new and nice used stuff and the side stainless is original. Headlights, parking lights, turn signals, brake lights, and dome lamp work as they should. I installed a NOS Delco headlight switch last year. It has an older base coat, clear coat White body with Metalflake Blue painted side panels. The door Bowties are painted silver. The underhood area, both sides of the inner fenders, splashpan, etc are all painted white just as they did in the '60's. This car is not perfect and neither were these cars when they were running down the dragstrip 50+ years ago. It shines great, it looks great, it's solid, and it draws much attention where ever it goes. I've had the car running in the 13 teens, but with some more tuning it will run 12.90's. I usually shift it at around 6400or 6500 RPMs. This is NOT the original Hydrophobia! This is a tibute to that car and to the NHRA Junior Stock classes from 1964-1971. This car was a Junior Stocker in the day, but it's real history is unknown. It did have a Hydro at one time, as well as a Stahl Traction Device and Dougs Fenderwell Headers. I also found Dark Green Metallic paint around the windshield opening when I removed the glass and rubber.
