Description

1967 Chevrolet Bel Air. A beautiful survivor car that was one family owned in Texas. The body and trim are original. The lines are all factory with no accidents to ruin the fit or shape. The front and rear of the car are superb from the grill to the bumpers. I brought this car from Texas to MA several years ago when I saw the 396 big block in it. The 396 is a period correct 1966 engine It is the 325 HP version and close to stock. It was a 283 car as delivered from the factory but if you need a new engine why not use a big block! The exhaust runs through manifolds to a dual exhaust system.
There were many surprises for me including a limping transmission. My friend Fred, a retired army mechanic offered to rebuild the Powerglide automatic. Fred found it also needed a rear main seal which required him to pull the engine. Fred replaced the rear main seal and found the engine clean as a whistle inside like it was recently rebuilt. Fred did rebuild the Powerglide. Fred also detailed the engine and engine bay. Since this was going to be a long haul car he replaced all of the belts, hoses, gaskets and engine accessories including a mini starter, Holley carburetor, alternator, water pump, fuel pump, gas tank, fuel sender and radiator.
The interior was redone as part of the older restoration and is still in very nice shape. The front seat was recently rebuilt with new springs and padding added. The dash is in exceptional condition. The headliner is a nice original.
The suspension also got all new life with new big block springs, shocks. ball joints. bushings and a big Summit 1-1/8 inch sway bar up front.
The tires are new Cooper Cobras on 15 x 7 inch GM rally wheels for the police car look.
Since this is a mid-range model Belair it didn't have power steering and it was manual drum brakes. The front brakes are now a POL disc brake conversion with excellent stopping power. POL was also used for the power steering conversion which includes a new pump, a remote reservoir and a new steering box.
Everything works on the Belair except the AM radio which needs an antenna. The car does pass the strict MA inspection including all lights and safety items like seat belts and emergency brake. The wipers and squirters work too.
The car shows very well. The paint is clean and shiny but it will need some attention in the future. The door jambs are the original paint that is in great condition. Most of the car is very nice except that the top and trunk area have developed some tiny blisters; you must look close to see them. The right front fender has a bubble near the bottom. The bottom of the car is very nice. This is a Texas car that has never seen a snowflake.
In summary this a beautiful Belair that has had a lot of nice upgrades. It is very reliable with the 396 Powerglide combination.
You can drive this car anywhere!
