1969 Camaro Indy Pace Car Brief History
The '69 stands out above the rest, with its Dover White paint accented by sunburn-bright Hugger Orange graphics; its distinctive Rally Sport grille and tail lamp treatment; and of course, its unapologetically showy orange and black interior with hound's tooth upholstery.
To give 1969 Camaro buyers their chance to roll like an Indy 500 champ, RPO Z11 was whipped up to make a convertible Camaro look like it just rolled out of the winner's circle.
The 1969 Camaro Indy Sport Convertible Option for Chevrolet SS/Rally Sport production cars included paint, graphics and interior identical to the pace cars used at Indy, as well as the "cowl induction" air induction hood and rally wheels. The privilege of owning a 1969 Camaro pace car replica came with a relatively high price tag at $3,405 for a base model.
To make the resemblance even closer to some of the cars used at Indy, Chevrolet recommended piling on extra-cost options such as a Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission, Posi-traction, power steering, a power top, a console with special instrumentation, an AM radio, front and rear spoilers, a sport styled steering wheel, custom deluxe seat and front shoulder belts, and Soft-Ray tinted glass.
Though Chevrolet hoped to build one for each of its dealers, approximately 6,400, there were actually 3,675 1969 Camaro pace car replicas built.
This Car: The "Yankee"
Owned throughout the 1980s by Terry L. of Minneapolis, MN, on January 17, 1989, Terry sold it to Ed W. of Camarillo, CA. Ed spent the next several years restoring the car to a very high standard. Notice the "Yankee" graphic on the trunk. If only the Pace Car could talk, tell us all the wild times it had. That is Ed in the photos getting it onto the trailer the day he acquired it. Upon the full restoration, Ed rarely drove the car, it was kept indoors as a show piece.
Exterior
The paint is immaculate. It is registered with the pair of black CA plates and they are included for a CA buyer only. Brand new convertible top just installed last week, 15" rims and the set of original 14" are included with the sale. The headlight doors work, as well as the headlight washers.
MechanicsThis car is mechanically sound just as you would want. It is fast, reliable and smooth driving. 396/350 from a 1969 Nova, bolted to this car's original 12 bolt posi rear end, with Muncie 4 Speed transmission with Hurst shifter. Just rebuilt the Rochester carb, power brake booster, new correct Delco battery, clutch fan, 11" clutch installed, the original bell housing is included, dual exhaust, many correct features such as hose clamps, fuel filter, working cowl induction.
Interior
Super clean, comfortable and correct hound's tooth interior on original components, everything works: clock, power top, wipers/washers, gauges, lighter, courtesy lights, AM/FM factory radio with hidden Ipod connection in the glove box, with hidden speakers, no holes drilled for the install. Correct GM seatbelts, original rosewood steering wheel. Spare and jack set in the trunk.
Other
Included with the sale are: original chrome gear shift knob, bell housing, old photos and receipts, custom size car cover and new front grille bra. Car is sold as - is, no warranty. Clear CA title in my name, fully registered and insured, stored indoors at all times. Call (831) 375-7363 with any questions. No dealers or trade offers please. Thank you for looking.
