The Chevelle’s
popularity in the horsepower wars prompted Chevrolet to create the ultimate
musclecar, the LS6 SS454. Endowed with the largest cubic-inch displacement and
the highest horsepower rating of any factory vehicle to that time, the Chevelle
has proven over time to have lasting status as the premier American musclecar.
At the heart of this car is the famous 454 cubic inch LS6 big-block engine packing 11.25:1 forged pistons, rods, and steel crank. An 800-cfm Holley four barrel mounted on a voluminous aluminum intake, Chevy’s hottest solid-lifter camshaft and high-flow closed-chamber heads combined to produce colossal power. The factory’s official rating of 450 horsepower and 500lb-ft of torque were considerably lower than actual dyno figures.
Beyond its legendary performance, the 1970 Chevelle SS is also one of the best-looking cars of its era, as this Black Cherry four-speed Sport Coupe demonstrates. Restyled for 1970, the car possesses a more muscular look than its predecessor, with bulging fenders and a visually larger front grille. The optional cowl-induction hood adds to the aggressive look while providing more breathing to the thumping big-block.
This LS6 coupe is finished in the unusual Black Cherry color complemented with painted twin white Rally stripes under the clear coat. Other correct SS features include the blacked-out grille, bright wheelwell moldings, black rear bumper insert, twin rectangular exhaust outlets and F70-14 Magnum wheels fitted with Firestone Wide Oval tires. The option list is short befitting an all-business street machine: power steering and vacuum-assisted power brakes w/ front discs.
This all-matching numbers car is also equipped with the optional M-22 Rock-Crusher four-speed manual transmission; a twelve-bolt Positraction rear end is standard with the LS6. This Southern car was refreshed with a high-quality respray in the original color, but most of the rest of the car is original, with the odometer showing only 32 859 miles.
