Description

For sale is a 1969 Chevelle SS396 4-speed with factory AC. This southern US car has been through a complete ground up, body off the frame restoration. Everything on this car is has been either replaced or refinished. If you are looking for one of these cars that is as mint as it can be, this one is well worth looking at. This car is, to the best of my knowledge, and original SS 396, factory AC 4-speed car, but it is not a numbers matching car. If you want one of those, read no further.
Body/Undercarriage – as stated, this restoration started with a very solid southern US body. All of the panels on the car are original, with the exception of both rear quarter panels. They were replaced vs repaired due to some rust along the seam at the rocker panel, and a bit around the wheel well opening. Other than that, it has all of the original panels that came with the car. The body was stripped to the bare metal and brought back to what it now looks like with pain staking care. The paint color is an original 69 Chevelle color called Cortez Silver. I love this color on these cars. The original color was a dark green. The final finish was color sanded and polished to a silky smooth finish. It looks amazing. The underside was all epoxy primed and finished with a beautiful satin black finish to really make the undercarriage stand out. Everything that could be powder coated on the undercarriage was done that way. The frame was media blasted and then went through the powder coating process, rear end, rad cradle, brackets of any description, and all suspension components were powder coated as well. There are all new brakes, brake lines, shocks, rear coil springs, gas lines, gas tank and straps…you name it…everything is new. The stock rear trailing arms were replaced with Pure Muscle aftermarket components to help give extra strength and adjustment to the rear end. The 12 bolt rear end was completely torn down and rebuilt with all new bearings and seals. Nothing was missed. Inside the trunk, it has been completely restored. All of the trunk floor panels and inner fender wells are original to the car and in mint condition. I believe that the carpet in the trunk is an aftermarket piece, but fits like a glove.
On the front end, everything is new…grill, stainless trim, headlight rims & retainers, Dynacorn bumper, emblems. The only original item is the two front turn signals, and they are in great shape. The rear end has a new Dynacorn bumper, tail pipe tips, and trim rings around the tail lights. The two stainless trim pieces that run between the tail lights are original to the car, as are the two tail light lenses. All of the wiring harnesses inside the body of the car are original.
Drivetrain – The completely rebuilt 396 engine is not the original engine to the car, but is a correct 396 block for a 1969 Chevelle. It sports original GM Snowflake aluminum heads that are correct for an L78 Chevelle, but again are not original to the car. The engine was built exactly to the 396/375HP specs as laid out by GM back in the day. It sports a 780 Holley dual feed carb, as well as a GM HEI ignition system. I have maybe 400 miles on it since firing it up back about 4 months ago. The engine runs strong and sounds amazing with the help of a complete new stainless steel exhaust system with new 50 Series Delta Flow Flowmaster mufflers. The radiator is a fully re-cored original GM rad that is correct for the car. The original M21 4-speed transmission was rebuilt as well, using all GM components where possible. It shifts as smoothly as any old GM 4-speed I have ever driven. The AC system has yet to be finished. There is a new evaporator core inside the “suitcase” AC box on the firewall. All of the original wiring harness was used to hook up everything associated with the AC to date, and everything works as it should.
The car has all new weather stripping, as well as new front and rear glass, with the original GM soft blue side glass. The side glass is in great shape, but has a few marks in it due to it’s age. The front and rear stainless trim around the glass is original GM trim that was restored and polished to a brilliant shine. The trim above the side glass is aftermarket and looks surprisingly good. I have the original GM trim that came with the car as well. The seats were re-upholstered a few years ago, but look perfect. The dash was taken out and completely cleaned, and the lenses were polished to make them look like new. Right now, the factory tach is not working due to the HEI set up. Same for the alternator gauge. The speedometer works, but the odometer seems to have stopped working on me. It was working, but quit not too long ago. The mileage shows 31,320. The correct 279/280 horns have been completely restored and work perfectly. It also has a completely restored Comfort Grip steering wheel, which looks great. The console is original to the car. Carpets are all new. The seat belts are correct dated 1969 GM belts with all original buckles. The car currently has no sound system in it at all. All door panels are in excellent shape, along with all of the window cranks and arm rests.

It has the original 14” x 7” GM Rally Wheels, with 225/70/14 Road Hugger radial tires. These tires are not new, but have a lot of tread left on them, and actually look pretty good on the car.

If there are any questions at all about the car, please do not hesitate to contact me with them. I’m pretty sure I have left some things out.
