Description
My 1962 Corvair Monza 900 Convertible is looking for a new home. Time for the next generation to own and enjoy.
3 Speed Manual, 102hp "Crossed Flags" emblem** aka thenormally-aspirated High Performance motor.I've owned this wonderfulrust-free car for 15 years.I brought it home from Colorado in 2003.Always stored for 15 yrs in my A/C'd garage since I've owned, it'snever spent the night outside.I've driven it approx. 5000 miles now@102,400 miles. It's a true survivor, with its original engine/drivetrain, neither of which has ever been removed. A groovy dream to drive, and, of course, ALL heads turn when driven by.As you'll see in thefotos here (links below to 70 more fotos and video), it's a uniquelybeautiful car.I have all receipts since I purchased the car.
-- Please note that the fire extinguisher seen is there only because it's required for car shows or displays.
**Two Trivia Facts:
1. The 'crossed flags' emblem used on the high performance motor is actually a cross-sectional view of the engine block and cylinder heads.
2. Ralph Nader owned Corvairs it's true. This included a 1960butt-ugly 4 dr sedan (Still being driven) and, rumor has it he owned theconvertible he's driving. see picture!

Ok - now back to our car, by category:
Paint: Well-prepped older repaint.Contains various imperfections, including touched-up scratches / chips from over the years.Largest is atouched up quarter-sized chip on the engine lid edge kayak vs. car =kayak won (see picture). But, it still gets TONS of attention at showsand on the road, as the paint shines very, very nicely.Remember, theCorvair back in the day was an 'everyman's car. It's usually theonly Corvair wherever I bring it, so, it often starts more conversationsthan any other classics in the area.
Body/Floor, etc: No Rust.Fortunately, a Colorado car nicelyrust-proofed back in the day (Ziebart, etc).Engine compartment alsohas zero rust, including battery box (with new plastic tray).
Brakes - Rebuilt wheel cylinders, replaced brake hoses, shoes, converted to dual-chamber master cylinder.
Chassis - Replaced F and R shocks.Otherwise, the usual sounds from a 60 year old chassis.
Engine/Drive Train: Small Leak at main seal.Noticeable when car is notrun regularly.I've used the same piece of cardboard for years - stillintact.Minimal effect on oil level, certainly not enough to considerremoval/rebuild, etc. Pushrod tube seals were Viton-replaced 8 yrs ago.Transmission shifts perfectly.Replaced Gear Oil with Amsol API/GL4lubricant. Also, when tunnel was opened for inspection, shifter linkageswere cleaned/lubricated and transmission input shaft seal replaced.Replaced U-joints / rear wheel bearings - both strongly recommended onthe '60-'62 cars.Replaced muffler.
Electrical / Lighting - All systems/circuits excellent(Starting/charging/ignition/lighting/lamps, etc).Rebuilt Generator, replaced V/R (original AC Delco V/R included), Petronix electronicignition. Battery replaced in spring 2018.Original radio in excellentcondition.Remember the "civil defense markers" on the dial?Upgradedto dual-style speaker.Replaced all light lenses, includingparking/front turn lenses.Upgraded yellow hi-beams.All interior andexterior lamps function perfectly.Added headlight warning chimecircuit (best project ever).
Instrument lamps replaced with LED.Equipped with a two-speedwiper/washer and cigarette lighter.Instrument panel is original /virtually perfect, with the addition of a well-placed Tach - very handyto have, but more importantly it looks cool :-)
Fuel - Replaced fuel tank, rebuilt carburetors, replaced fuel pump, added primary stage fuel filter.
Glass - Replaced windshield and Seal.Original windows clear and in A+ condition (see picture).
Interior - Mostly original.Replaced carpet, front seats partiallyreupholstered.Replaced kick panels.Original front door panels, visors, rear seat, rear armrests, and all cranks/handles. Convertibletop replaced approx 20 yrs ago.In VG condition due to indoor storageand LOTS of Armor All! - no tears.Convertible top tape repair alongnew binding (see picture). Replaced binding and end caps.Rear Windowis supple and approx 80% transparent (see picture). When top replaced,in an attempt to keep as original as possible, owner left the originalvery worn side pads in place (see picture) - Although only visible frominside, still an odd decision, so they remain until the new owner isready to replace current top down the road. All bows and hardware inexc. condition.Period seat/lap belts in Exc. Condition. Why a pictureof the shift knob?Original 3-speed pattern knobs (and repros) arevirtually impossible to find.I actually caught one unfortunate soultrying to steal my shift knob at a car show (He likely won't try again.)Included is a shift knob made from a #11 billiard ball (red/white), anda generic small black knob.I use them when the car is publiclyparked.
Wheels/Tires - Original 2-prong spinner wire wheel covers in VGcondition.Whitewall tires in Exc. condition.Spare is also VG, but,not a match with the 4 installed tires.
Trim - Bumpers and optional bumper guards VG - Exc.All trim andemblems are VG-excellent.Original rocker panel covers and door sillplates in VG condition.Headlight bezels are VG - Exc. Very rare NOSstainless headlight Stone Guardslook GREAT over the dual-coloredheadlights.Replaced all rubber - door weather seals, trunk, enginelid, and engine compartment rubber heat seals.Original rear grill isFair - Good condition.New, this style is rare and very expensiveused for 1962 only. Most folks replace these with the 1964 stylereadily available.I'm a 'semi-purist', so I kept the original grill!
The car will include lots of extra goodies and accessories - OEMhubcaps, lenses, bulbs, fuses, complete shop manual set, bezels, factorykeys, etc.Plus the all-important #11 billiard ball!
