Description
A truly
rare and original, award winning car estimated to be 1 of less than 17 ‘65
fuelies with F40 suspension, radio delete and knock-offs. The fuel-injected,
375-horsepower, 327-cubic-inch engine was $538-not a lot of money now, but a
hefty percentage of the base price of a Corvette convertible, which listed at
$4,106. As such, only 771 cars (both coupes and convertibles) were equipped
with fuel injection in 1965. In fact, it was the only mid-year (C-2) Corvette that could be had with fuel injection and disc brakes.
I have 200+ color pics taken during the methodical frame-off restoration (between 1997 and 2001) with a sample at the link below.
This was almost certainly a car built for the ‘65 astronaut program run by Rathmann Chevrolet at the time since it was delivered to the CAC Zone office in Jacksonville. With that said, we have not been able to confirm that an astronaut chose this car since they could also choose more practical everyday cars as well since most had young families. Alan Shepard of NASA (Apollo 14) did drive a white '65 fuelie convertible built in Dec 1964 (same month and year as my build) but that car had base wheels and a radio. Second owner bought this car around May 1997 from the original owner. I have pictures of the car back to the 70’s and it has knock-offs in all pics. Car comes with 5 original Kelsey Hayes knock-offs worth well over $10,000 alone! Car has been driven just 2,725 miles since restoration was completed in 2001 and current chassis pics are linked below. I have all judging sheets for these grades:
Bloomington Gold Certified in 2001. Points available of 8,475 with
just 260 lost. Gary Naber was stamp judge.
NCRS Chapter Top Flight in 2005 with score of 97.2
NCRS Chapter Top Flight in 2002 with score of 97.8
NCRS National Top Flight in 2001 with score of 97.6
Chip's Choice Display Car (Barn Finds) - Corvettes at Carlisle 2011
Past well-known corvette owners' names are available upon request and it's a "Who's Who" for sure including a past long-time Judging Chairman for NCRS. The highly respected Tom Ames (NCRS paint expert) painted the car in base/clear and it still looks phenomenal. Jerry Bramlett, the well-known fuelie expert, tuned the fuel injection during the restoration and it still idles and runs fantastic. Video link can be found here to show smooth and clean idle of car:
