Description

Here is the scoop. I bought this 1968 Red Impala Coupe (Along with another 1968 Blue Impala SS), quite a few years ago. This Impala is a Northern Car (Wisconsin) and after I got it I quickly found out that the frame had rusted in two The body had a fair amount of Bondo in it and the interior was in near mint condition. It was a three on the tree with a 6 cylinder motor. As indicated above I bought another 1968 Impala (Blue) around the same time from Missouri that had a solid frame, locked up Power Glide and was a true SS. It was my donor for the frame, some fenders and the SS stuff (Most of which is included in this auction). I have been working with Hot Rods since the sixties and I saw an opportunity to come out with something special. I bought a 1986 Chevrolet C30 and grabbed the big block and the Th400 out of it for this project. I built the entire motor myself basically out of some used and some new parts. The motor that is in the Red Impala is a 489cid. This motor was built with a Scat 0.250 stroked crankshaft, King bearings, Comp cam (I think ~0.500 lift), Comp timing chain and gears, Manley "Undercut" Valves, a Wiend "Dual Plane" Manifold and a Holly 810CFM Mechanical Secondary Spread Bore. I spent about 60 hours porting/polishing the 781 heads and matched it to the intake manifold. I also cut 0.110" off the top of the stock pistons and honed the cylinders to get them round again. There was 0.003" clearance (Piston to cylinder wall) when I put this motor together (Yes 3 thousands so there is a little piston slap when cold). The rotating assembly was balanced to +/- 0.5gm. As I said this was the first time I got this deep into a motor build. I also have a variety of parts in my shed that will go with the auction. I know I have a couple of front finders, inner door panels, a 10 bolt 3link diff and some bumpers (And I'm sure there is some more. Vehicle also has a front disc brake conversion. I may still be missing some thing in the description (It has been together for a couple of years now). The speedometer has never worked so mileage is approximate.
The first time I took I took it out I held it in first gear til it wound all the way out and held it there for a second or two. If it was going to blow up, I wanted this to happen on day one ..and it held! Every nut, bolt, rivet, bushing or what ever has been replaced on the frame and I have slowly been taking the SS stuff out of my shed and putting it in the Red 68 over time (Bucket seats, console, etc.). Two things I overlooked when I started this journey was how to keep this beast cool and hooked up. If I am at a stop light, I'm in drive and I put my foot to the floor, the car will wind all the way through first and halfway through second before she starts to grab (Looks neat but you need to back off a little if you want the traction). And she don't like being in traffic with the Imported (I'm being nice here), one row, radiator it currently has in it. The pictures are fairly explicit. I'm a Grease Monkey not a body, or Interior Guy. Take a look at the pictures and email me with questions before bidding! If you want to buy the Impala without the motor I will take out the motor and reduce the sale price by $1000.00. Also I have the paperwork tags and color code plate from my SS for sale if your interested. Thanks for your consideration.
