Description

This is my 1971 Chevrolet Impala Custom Coupe. It’s been in our family since 2/10/1989, when it was purchased used with 22,335 miles on it. It was owned by my wife’s grandfather, a retired banker in the small town of Muskogee, Ok, and since he was retired, it usually made 2 miles trips to get coffee or go golfing at the local course. We inherited this vehicle when he passed away and I have kept in in running condition, added wheels and tires, and an electronic exhaust cutout - which allows you to fully open the exhaust system at the push of a button. Other than that it’s bone stock and all original miles.
The interior of this car is near perfect and all original. The issues I can think of are as follows: the plastic door panels show wear. The radio lights up but I don’t hear sound - my assumption is the paper cone speakers are shot for starters. The dashboard is cracked in the middle. The driver side rear window regulator needs work. It is currently in the “up” position and I took the handle off and put it in the glove box so no one would forget and put it down. There’s slight wear on the carpet where the driver’s heel goes. On the positive side of things, the original interior is immaculate, the headliners is as well, and besides the above it shows as a 9/10 interior. The trunk liner is disintegrating and leaves a coating of rubber dust in the trunk. I will also put some window regulator parts and the 4 original hubcaps in the trunk along with the original spare tire. I’ll also include the original owner’s manual, and GM brochure for the car as well as random receipts.
Onto the outside. The car body is very straight with only door dings (mainly on the passenger rear where my daughter repeatedly pushed our other car door against it while parked in the garage. While the paint on the sides of the vehicle is shiny and well taken care of, the top of the vehicle (hood, trunk, and roof) show wear and appear to be flat and dull, with some paint completely worn down to the metal an areas. This was caused by my uncle putting a car cover on it in the interim of grandfather passing and me receiving the vehicle in my garage, Apparently, the wind and rain shook the car cover enough to sand off the paint in those areas. The car could use new weatherstripping throughout as well. I never drove it in the rain and kept it in the garage and only washed it by hand so I didn’t have any issues but if you want to drive it in bad conditions you might want to replace it. As you’ll see in the pics there is an impala logo that’s broken and a piece of trim that’s loose but not falling off. The driver side sideview mirror is old and loose. It has been rubbing against the body for years and has worn some of the paint off. There are small rust stains in certain places. Nothing you could poke through but probably worth some attention before they get bad. I have shown them in the images. Mainly around the trunk and some surface stuff showing up on the area of the roof where the paint is rubbed off.
Engine and transmission. This car takes a minute to warm up. It has a new battery and even in the manual it says to let the car idle and warm up. I usually pump the gas a few times and start it up and let it idle for a few minutes and then we are good to go. I’ve only put ethanol-free gasoline in it since I took delivery. My mechanic told me this is to keep the carbs from gumming up. I haven’t had to deal with the carb since the rebuild I did when I took delivery so I’d say it’s worth noting. Once the car is warmed up it just cruises. You an go down the highway at 70mph without any issue and the long wheelbase just floats as it cruises down the road. This platform was in use by GM until 1996 so in many ways the car is ahead of its time. The motor is strong but the car is heavy and built for cruising so don’t expect to be able to do a burnout or anything by just punching the gas. The transmission shows no sign of issues. I haven’t felt any slipping, stalling, hesitating, or anything other than just going in the direction you ask it to. You had asked me about the oil gummed up on the transmission. I had my mechanic, Mike Flinn, of Flinn Automotive in Salt Lake City, go through the whole vehicle to make sure there weren’t any obvious issues we could repair. The gunk on the transmission is literally decades of buildup. He wasn’t concerned about any of it. We did replace some motor mounts however so it does have new motor mounts. The car came with factory A/C and heat. I haven’t looked into why the a/c doesn’t work (besides the fact that it’s old) but the heat blows hot.
Final thoughts. With new paint, this car would be close to perfect. Paint + the few things listed above and the car would be show quality. Then miles are original. I myself have only put on about 2,000 since I took possession years ago. It’s an inexpensive classic to keep on the road as parts have been cheap and plentiful when needed. I definitely get thumbs up every time I drive it and it seats 6 people pretty easily. If you have any further questions please ask and I can address them before you buy.
