Description
Offering a rare 1968 Chevrolet Suburban. This sweetheart Suburban is a survivor, perfect as is or ready for resto-mod.
In my opinion, the coolest of the Suburbans, was the 1967-1972 Chevrolets. These all had the fabulous 3-door style, with that gorgeous long left rear fender. Of these, I believe the '67 & '68 to be the most attractive because they have the slanted front end, while the '69-72 fronts are flat up & down. As the '67s did not have side markers, in my mind, that makes the '68 the best. My family calls her "Bluebury".
Suburbans of this generation had little plastic. Grill, headlamp bezels, dash were ALL METAL!
I am only selling this gem because I am needing a ¾ ton model K for towing; this is the ½ ton model C, two-wheel drive.
This Suburban has its original body/chassis with 292 cid straight six as from factory. Along the way, it has been given some mild vintage speed equipment with a Holley 4-bbl carb, Clifford finned intake manifold and exhaust headers but can very easily be returned back to factory OEM specs. Orig. 4-speed manual tranny.
ODO: 98,889 miles.
VIN: CS168Z135816
WB: 127"
COLOR: Deep cobalt blue.
INTERIOR: Beige with blue tweed upholstery.
Performance: Starts promptly. Idles smoothly. Exhaust clear. No abnormal engine sounds. Drives equally well at highway speed or in city traffic. I have no problem driving her at 70 mph. Suspension firm. Steering and tracking straight and with no vibration or shimmy.
Chassis: She runs on 20" HELO 2-piece 6-lug, 5-spoke custom rims, however, no suspension lowering has been performed. Tires are Goodyear Wrangler SR-A 275/60R20 with very good tread life left. New full spare included. Caps missing on L. Undercarriage, including frame, fuel tank, axles, etc. in unmolested condition. Oil pan is not dented. Orig. transmission shift arm/knob. Rubber booty is soft, and not torn. Dual exhaust from headers to chrome tips without rust. Hand brake functions properly.
Body: Original build-sheet on glove box door. No body damage. All panels are straight and gaps are even and with factory clearance. (see photos). Front & rear bumpers have new chrome and no dents/bends. Fender mounts and hood & door hinges have no shims indicating no prior accident repair work. Top is without ripples. Original glass all the way around. Outside handles work. R & L outside mirrors present. Window rubber seals need replacing. Door rubber seals soft. Drip rails/ cowling, firewall, inner fenders, bumper valances, headlamp bezels, grill all solid. Paint is deep cobalt blue. There are a few chips, the most notable of which I have photographed. Plastic taillamp, backup and turn indicator lenses are NOT broken nor cracked. Tailgate doors open smoothly and easily. Upper glass support arms grab and release perfectly. Antenna needs replacing. Locks work.
Engine bay: Engine specs and speed equipment as noted above. New a/c compressor and accessory radiator. Engine radiator with clean coolant. Hoses supple. Good compression. No leaks. New chrome air cleaner with new filter.
Electrical: Headlamps ( with halogen bulbs), tail lamps, turn indicators all work. Horn works. Wipers work. Dash instruments work. Dash turn indicator arrows illuminate properly. Dome light (original) present, but not working.
Interior: In original condition (exc. as noted). Headliner fabric has been removed by prior owner, however, that is good as it confirms absolutely NO rust on the metal. All the original metal headliner bows are present! Even original coat hanger hooks are present. Vinyl dash with cracking and covered with fabric protector. Orig. sun visors present and swing nicely, but faded. Inside rearview mirror present, and swivels. Original beige steering wheel/hub with several hairline cracks in plastic, but no chips (see photos). Dash with factory original beige paint. All instruments work. Instrument lenses are not cracked. Aftermarket Sun tachometer mounted on steering column. Aftermarket Sony sound system, with removable face control panel. Electronic sound system box is loose in dash. Ashtray present. Vintage air conditioning, however, not connected. Factory heat, but I have not needed to use it. Glove box door opens/closes/locks but is missing Chevrolet name plate. Interior glovebox in fine condition. All window cranks present and operate correctly. Windows go up/down smoothly. Wind wings open easily. Good chrome. Door latch handles in good condition also. Inside tailgate handle missing. Front and middle bench seats reupholstered in period correct material, clean with no tears/holes. Third bench has not, and is free for cargo hauling. Front seat adjustment works. Middle bench missing L ashtray; R present. GM seatbelts present and work. Inside door panels have been reupholstered some time ago. Floors are solid, covered with original, but old, rubber and show little rust. There is some flaking around the front right (see photo of front right sil plate). Much of the flooring is still covered with factory original beige paint (see transmission tunnel). Otherwise, all the other sill/quarter panels show no visible rust. All door jams, center post, door bottoms, window wells are WITHOUT RUST. Even the back wooden flooring is the factory original, and is solid, without rot!!!
Summary: Try finding a 3-door '67-68 Chev. Suburban in any condition. You won't find them often in Hemmings Motor News. They are just not out there especially in unmolested condition. The body on this one is straight and rock solid. It spent much of its life in the desert southwest. This one is ready to enjoy as it, like I have been doing. If your desire is to fully restore, it hides no surprises.
Ready to inspect and test drive.
Location: Suburban Kansas City
I have many more pictures for interested parties. The car is located in a suburb of Pittsburgh and can be inspected throughout the duration of this auction. I can be reached at 860-883-3998 with any questions. Thanks and good luck.
