The Volt is the best plugin hybrid on the road today. The 53 mile EPA estimated rage has suited my mother well in the in the 3.5 years she has owned it.
The car runs all electric until the battery runs flat then kicks on the 1.5 4 cyl engine to operate as a generator to drive the dual electric motors connected to the front axel, ensuring that even without any charge in the battery you get the kick provided by the instant torque of an electric drivetrain without the issue of range anxiety!
If you work within 25mi of your home it is likely you will not use the gasoline motor most of the time as long as you can charge the vehicle over night (2.3hrs on 220v or 13hrs on 110v). Additionally any long distance drives and you wont need to take lengthy breaks to recharge, and can simply fuel up at any gas station along your route, if the total 420mi EPA estimate range is not enough.
