Description
1968 VE Valiant Safari
Regal Wagon
These ‘Longroof’ cars are getting harder to find and aren’t getting any cheaper, restoration costs are going up and right hand drive Australian built chrome bumper cars are steadily increasing in value.
Factory 225 cui 160 hp Slant six 2 barrel carb factory model, after market extractors, factory column shift 3 speed auto.
The Slant six runs well, drives fine and the auto shifts fine. I’ve fitted new plugs, points, leads, rotor button and distributor cap, the carby has been rebuilt, new fuel filter and new air filter. The car hasn’t moved much recently and only started to move it in and out of the garage so it needs a good run.
The body was taken back to bare metal, all rust professionally removed with replacement steel panels and a full respray including interior boot area, dash, interior exposed panels and engine bay in Chrysler Slate grey. Roof painted in off white to match the era. No corners cut in the rust repair and paint on this car. I have approx. 150 photos detailing the extent of work undertaken which will come with the purchase of the car, I am happy to show these pre purchase as there is nothing to hide with this sale. Arrow straight body work, it really needs to be seen to be appreciated.
Factory bone colour door and boot trims in good condition. Rear seat is in matching bone trim, also in good condition but needs a good clean, see photos for details. Headlining is original and complete but I planned to replace it. The front bench seat is not originally from this car and has a Mexican blanket style cover that has been sewn professionally to cover the late 70’s brown trim that the seat is covered in, the brown front seat trim is clean and usable, it is actually new but the customer apparently never picked it up, I only intended this as an interim solution as the Safari really needs the factory bucket seats. I also have the original front split bench that will be included in the sale which need a re-trim (these are very hard to find), the previous owner started by having this seat partly redone in a custom style. I’ve been told that with the split front bench seat, and it does look like it is correct, that the whole of the front and rear seats will fold flat to make an awesome Drive In wagon. It will also be sold with the original dash pad which is usable but I planned to find a better one or have it re-trimmed. These are reasonably easy to source.
Other items included are - factory chrome fuel fill drip trim, factory chrome rear pillar wind deflectors, transmission cooler (after market and additional to the radiator trans cooler) New Kenwood CD Player in original location (no dash butchering) new Kenwood rear speakers in boot quarter trims, speaker wires in place if front speakers are wanted. Original hubcaps and wheel trims in good condition, good usable glass and the chrome is in good condition.
There is some original sales/service documents including the original buyers Certified Car Care Plan (Service history) dated as sold on 13-11-68 from Fiske Bros Motors in Box Hill Victoria, the Chrysler dealer at the time, with some service history documented making this vehicle more desirable. I have a lot of receipts from previous owners that give an insight into the history of this car and would help the buyer trace back the cars history.
The restoration I undertook on this car was careful to maintain it as an unmolested standard Valiant other than lowering the suspension slightly which can easily be corrected if desired.
Spares that will come with the car – front split bench seat which include folding centre (need re-trim), set of Regal rear quarter panel badges (might be NOS or at least in excellent condition) dash pad (useable but I wanted to source a better one), various trims, door handles, clips, bolts and badges that I thought weren’t good enough to use but would be good as spares or reference parts. Whatever I have left over will come with the car including left over paint for touch ups if required in the future.
The list of things to do, please note that this is roadworthy items only and only my opinion.
· At least two tyres, if you intend to run the standard rims which I didn’t.
· Over axle exhaust pipe, it has some rust holes; the rest of the exhaust looks fine.
· 2 side view mirrors. There is one mirror included in the spares for reference.
· 2 x interior armrest pads (2nd hand or these are available repo now).
There is sure to be more but nothing major that I know of.
· Refit Dash pad or fit replacement item.
· Check lights, horn, washers etc but they all seem to work fine.
I am selling the Valiant as another car has come up which is too good to pass up, I purely need the space. No corners have been cut on the Safari and I really wanted to finish the last few items which would see it as an awesome cruiser. There is no way you could build this Safari for this price, Now it is a car that you can personalise or merely finish cheaply or put your own spin on it without cost. It is a cheap ride to own before summer hits and enjoy having a right hand drive classic Aussie car on the road. The hard and expensive work is done. SA has SI plates, VIC has Club Permit and NSW has new rego laws that makes these cars even more attractive.
I am open to offers and the sale price is negotiable, but lowballer offers will be ignored, there is no way we slaved away in the garage for a million nights to give away a neat honest car for half the asking price. If you want to pay via Paypal, those Paypal fees will be added to the final price. I am happy to help with freight for interstate buyers, the buyer needs to organise freight, I can be available with reasonable notice to help load this on a carrier for you.
