1948 Chrysler New Yorker 4 door sedan for sale. 90k miles, original paint with some areas of patina, it has the straight 8 Spitfire motor which is original and complete, original interior, chrome is in nice presentable condition and all there, entire car is 100% complete and original, has the original California rear license plate with 1948 tab that I found in the trunk which matches a disabled vet license plate key chain tab, and key chain also has an original key fob from a local Sacramento jewelry store dated 1948, has signal light finder on dash, has rare optonal factory goose neck side mirrors, all hubcaps in good condition, everything is complete. I have the 3 original keys which work for the ignition, doors, trunk and glove box. I am the 2nd owner. History of the car is as follows, car was ordered new, by the original owner who was a WW2 Army vet, he did not buy it off the lot but ordered it from the factory through the local Vandenberg Chrysler Dealership in Sacramento , Ca. and it was Built on Aug. 9th, 1948. (I have a copy of the factory build sheet) The car stayed with the original owner and after his passing his wife kept the car until she was moved into an assisted living facility and their home was sold by her family. Her son kept the car in an enclosed storage facility for almost 20yrs until her death at 102yrs old, and then I acquired the car. Since acquiring the car, the gas tank was dropped, boiled out, painted and re-installed, the oil pan was also dropped, cleaned out, painted and re-installed with fresh oil, as well as all other system fluids. I just finished installing a new brake system, which included all new shoes, wheel cyclinders, races, brake lines, master cyclinder, seals, bearings etc. The wide white wall tires on it are brand new and still have the nubs still on them. They do not have any flats spots as the car has been stored with the tires off the ground. Personally I would keep it as is, and make it a good original driver, however due to sitting in storage, although it was inside, the headliner has become loose with age and started stagging down so it will need to be replaced, the tail pipe and muffler will need to be replaced as well. All the glass is original and windows roll up and down as they should. Although oxidized from years of sitting, I was able to rub out and wax areas of the good original paint and it looks like the original paint will make the car very presentable as is as you can see by how great it looks. This is a California car, it has spent its entire life in Sacramento California. I have inspected up under all the fender wells and doors and the only hint of rust I have found is below the battery box, which was probably due to battery acid. There are still patches of the original paint which can be seen up inside the fenders in areas where there is no road dirt or tar build up, which with careful cleaning most of the paint might be able to become exposed. I am having to begrudgingly part with this car because I no longer have the space or room to keep it, or another car I have, and it needs to find a good home with a new owner who can continue to keep it inside and be its new caretaker. One positive note is my brother has a car in Maine which he will be paying to get transported out here, so there is the opportunity for someone who buys this New Yorker to get it transported to their home at probably a reasonable rate on the transporters return trip. I have already been given one quote to transport the car from Sacramento to Scranton New York for $1,200 in an enclosed, a buyer may find a cheaper shipping rate if he choses to have it shipped on an open trailer, so if that gives any idea of shipping possibilities. I added to the post a link below with about 40 more pictures that might help you see the car better, the car has been in Sacramento California since new and still is. I live in a small town called Wilton which is in Sacramento County just south of Elk Grov and the car was sold new about 10 miles from here, and the original owner and car were only about 3 miles from my house. The car is complete mechanically, has had nothing removed, disturbed or dismantled. I believe it to be in mechanically sound condition as the only reason it had stopped being used by the previous owner was due to their age, not for any reason regarding the car. As a precaution to starting it up again after having been in storage so long, I drained the oil, dropped the oil pan, cleaned it out and put fresh oil in the car, the pan was repainted the factory silver. I took all the wheels off, all backing plates were cleaned, sand blasted, painted and reassembled with all new factory original brake shoes, wheel cylinders, master cyclinder, steel brake lines, springs, and seals. All the wheel bearings were cleaned, checked for pitting and wear and were all in like new condition, were repacked with new grease and re-installed. The gas tank was dropped, taken to a local shop where it was stripped, boiled out and examined and being in excellent shape was repainted and installed back on the car.
As far as missing, damaged or broken parts; the only thing is the knob which attaches to the end of the turn signal is missing, the glove compartment door has a crack in it, there is a plastic corner molding piece on the inside left drivers door that goes between the dash molding and the door molding that is cracked, the very bottom of the left corner of the drivers door window has a crack in the glass and is only visible when the window is rolled up all the way, and 2 of the window handles, one on the drivers side rear door, and the one front passengers side, the handles are there, but the end of the handle is missing, however I have an extra set of 4 of these handles, window eschelons and some other extra parts I acquired. All other handles, knobs, latches, locks, switches etc are intact and functioning correctly. I have all 4 original hubcaps, there is a spare rim with tire in the trunk, there is both chrome and stainless steel trim molding on the car, there are a few dings and dents in the stainless steel molding that runs along the bottom edge of the body between the fenders, but neary all the chrome and molding trim pieces are in nice condition, the worst of then is the left rear fender piece, which is stainless that has the center of it pushed in like maybe the old lady had brushed up against that edge driving it into the garage. There are what's called goose neck side mirrors on it, both on drivers and passengers side, these were a factory optional side mirror, normally the car was sold without side mirrors and just had a 4" stainless steel piece of molding that ran along the cowl between the door and hood, or they had a plain driver's side only side mirror, the last set of these I saw were on Ebay for $1,200. It has a set of white wall tires on it that are brand new, there is an accessory item on the dash called a traffic light finder which it came with from the original owner, I found what I believe to be the original licene plate of the car in the trunk, it matches the same number as on the little 1948 disabled veterans license plate tag keychain, all the keys work for locking and unlocking the doors, trunk, glove compartment and ignition. It needs new carpet and a new headliner which has deteriorated and is sagging down from years of just sitting, the interior upholstery is complete, original, and has had some moth damage from sitting in storage but can be driven and used as is unless or until someone wants to reupholster it, but there are no rips or tears in the seats. I believe all but one of the inside door panels and arm rests are in original presentable condition except the right front passenger door which has rips and is deteriorated. The exterior paint has had the high spot areas of the tops of the fenders, hood and roof develop what some nowadays refer to as "Patina" where the paint has thinned and is no longer waxable, however the rest of the paint on the car is still the original thick lacquer, has oxidized, but I was able to hand rub out several areas such as the end of the hood, right side fenders and doors and the paint is remarkably still in good condition and cleaned up very nice. The car is not perfect, but it has survived the years having been kept inside, is complete and original and has a lot of potential as keeping it as an original unrestored driver, or if someone wanted to restore it, they won't have to waist time spending their weekends shopping for parts.
