Wagoncollectors, have we a cargo-hauling rarity for you! Check out this 1953 ChryslerNew Yorker Town & Country Station Wagon. From the Black Hawk Collection, on a California Title with mileage affiantat 92,884, however speedo/ODO is inoperable.
Dressedin Caravan Beige over Cocoa Brown Metallic, this car’s original appearing paintis in overall satisfactory condition but there are multiple spots and other, various blemishes visible. Some of the chrome trim exhibits some pitting aswell. There is, however, a crack in the passenger-side front vent window. Thewagon’s bodywork is straight and solid, the chrome wraparound bumpers fittightly to the body and look great. The engine bay is very tidy and the cargoarea with wooden flooring and sides looks great. This model has reverse lights.
Thiswagon rolls on older Remington’s Cushion-Aire wide whitewall bias-ply tires, size L78-15 showing their age. Each tire is mounted on a steel wheel and toppedby a factory wheel cover. The wheel covers are in good, original order as arethe tires.
Underthe hood is an original 331 CID Hemi Firepower V-8 engine that appears to havebeen rebuilt it has a new wiring harness installed0. It is matched to a mostunusual dance partner, a M6 Presto-Matic two-speed semi-automatic transmissionwith a 3.54:1 rear end. Don’t let the clutch pedal or the shift quadrants,DLNR, fool you. The shift lever was column-mounted and has three positions: Low(in the “2nd” position of a conventional three-speed manual unit), High (in the“3rd” position), and Reverse (same as the three-speed) oil bath lid is missing. The clutch had to be depressed every time the gear shift lever was moved. Thisconfiguration had the effect of providing four gear ratios:
· UnderdriveLow, 3.57:1
· Low 2.04:1
· UnderdriveHigh, 1.75:1
· High, 1:1
Driverconvenience features include power, four-wheel drum brakes.
Inside, the wagon retains its original cloth, leather, wood and chrome interior. Thisexample has an interior that mirrors its outside, tan and brown cloth withleather and that leather has a unique ‘alligator’ or ‘crocodile’ pattern. Thefront and rear bench seats look great, as does the tan headliner above. The tancarpeting is in good, original order. A plastic-rimmed, three-spoke steeringwheel has aged well but is not flawless. The two-tone metal instrument panelcomes with a full array of gauges. It and inner door panels are all in verygood order. In back are a pair of ingress/egress assist handles on the back ofthe front bench along with an ashtray. A column-mounted shift lever and afactory AM radio complete the interior. The rear wood is in outstanding condition and is a site to behold withthe rear seat in the down position.
The 1953New Yorker had a less bulky look with the wheelbase reduced to 125.5 inches, aone-piece curved windshield and rear fenders integrated into the body. Wirewheels were now an option. The Saratoga line was dropped in 1953, replaced bythe New Yorker, with the New Yorker redesignated the New Yorker DeLuxe. Theconvertible and Newport hardtop were available only in the New Yorker DeLuxewhile the base New Yorker offered a long-wheelbase sedan and a Town &Country wagon.
Competitionto this New Yorker in 1953 included Buick’s Series 50 Super Estate Wagon,DeSoto’s Firedome V-8 Wagon, Dodge’s Coronet Sierra Wagon, Mercury’s EightStation Wagon and Pontiac’s Chieftain DeLuxe Station Wagon.
Wagonshave really become popular, so we don’t expect this one to linger. With sometouch-ups and attention, it could really be a standout at a cruise night orlocal car show. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to check out this Moparsurvivor that is older than Torqueflite!
