Description

1948 CHRYSLER NEW YORKER CLUB COUPE, STRAIGHT 8, FLUID DRIVE
This club coupe was located in the US in 2012 and imported in 2013, mileage is documented at 93,600 approx, is mostly original and unrestored, although routine maintenance and repairs have been carried out. It spent most of its life in California and was a well known winning car at shows, it is original, standard and UNMODIFIED
A quality repaint, including door jambs has been done within the past 10 years, with very few defects, chips, if any, chrome is superb with a very few minor flaws, body is straight and never damaged. The interior has not been repainted; while the bakelite front window reveals, speaker grille and glovebox lid would look perfect with a repaint, I preferred to leave it in the original condition. This work can be done if required.
There were very few of the New Yorker club coupes produced in 1948, about 2,500, and not many remaining. We mostly see the shorter wheelbase 6 cylinder version in Australia, the 8 cylinder has a longer hood and front guards, and a higher trim level. This car has the "Highlander" trim option, which is highly sought after by collectors. The trim is in excellent condition but the red bedford cloth has faded in parts, the OEM fabric is available in the US. Most of the rubbers are in good condition, the rear window seal needs to be replaced, and the front quarter vent seals would benefit from replacement. It has concealed running boards.
Mechanically; the "Spitfire" 323 cu in straight 8 engine and the "Fluid Drive" transmission are excellent, rebuilt less than three hundred miles ago, at a cost of US$10,000+, invoices available. Brakes are new and it stops without fuss, steering is light and positive and the car does not have to be 'wrestled' like some other similar large cars of the period. There are 4 new wide whitewall radials fitted, the spare is good. I do not know of any mechanical or body work that will need repairs done, apart from the rear screen seal, reseal front screen, Most parts readily available new in USA, panels, bumpers, mouldings available through clubs.
This car drives like a dream, is comfortable, classy, powerful and fast, it will cruise on the highway at 75MPH, and you can drive it all day and only use the clutch when moving off from a standstill or reversing.
A note to those who enquired when previously listed; the asking price is higher this time, I realised it had been undervalued after club members had told me its value was in the originality, high standard of maintenance and care taken of it since new, the rare "Highlander" trim option and the overall high standard of the entire vehicle. The previous owner claimed it was the best survivor 'out there' and after spending nearly a year searching for a convertible or 3 window coupe in comparable condition I can easily believe him, there are a few sedans with lower miles and similar quality but coupes and convertible are not to be seen,
Price is negotiable, and I will consider a trade on a muscle car, or Thunderbird, Corvette, Camaro, Mustang, Mopar etc, US convertible or hardtop, US half ton pickup, pre war Ford, C10, F100-150 etc, mobile soda blasting unit, Forward Look Virgil Exner Mopar 1955-61, SRT-8, HSV Senator, Grange etc, FPV, cash either way. L08 certification has been done and is plated (discretely!) Car can be sold with Qld full rego and RWC or unreg, Qld. number plate is relevant to age of car and is traditionalised/personalised but can include at Main Roads Dept. recommended value. $2000 non refundable deposit to confirm sale, payments to be made in cash only, can organise delivery for you.
