Challenger RT Factory 440-6 Automatic
We are offering for sale a 1971 Challenger RT that is a factory, numbers matching 440-6 automatic car. Both the engine and transmission are original to this car and have the partial VIN stamped in the correct locations.
The car is a decent driver that can be enjoyed as is or provide a great base for a high end restoration if that is your game. If you can do some of the work you can get into a pretty serious Mopar for a little more than the cost of a 340 or 383 car.
This Challenger was sold new in western Canada and as such, was not exposed to the tons of salt that an Ontario car would have been exposed to. This car was owned by the original owner until 2009. He ordered the car and we have the original Retail Buyer’s Vehicle Order and Agreement that includes a notation that he wanted a white side stripe. When the Challenger arrived at the dealer it had a black stripe. The dealer undertook to supply a white side stripe but this was never done.
Most of this Challenger RT’s (JS) factory options as indicated by the fender tag codes are as follows; 440-6 Pack engine(E87), automatic transmission(D32), blue body and roof (GB5), white and black bucket seat interior(H6XW), power disc brakes(B51), console(C16), bucket seats(C55), dual painted racing mirrors(G36), three speed windshield wipers(J25), sport hood (J54), drip rail moldings (M21), Dual exhaust (N41), chrome exhaust tips(N42), tachometer(N85), AM radio(R11), and black side stripe (V6X).
Additional options that were included on the Buyer’s Agreement are, power steering, undercoating, a block heater and a sure grip rear end. This Challenger RT was equipped with the standard 14" steel wheels and dog dish caps. Two original wheels and dog dish caps remain with the car along with the correct jack. No space saver with this car.
Unfortunately we do not have the Broadcast Sheet for this Challenger. The original owner had the rear seat recovered in the 1980s and the sheet probably was removed at that time.
When new, this Challenger RT was a daily driver for a few years and then became a fair weather car. When the owner moved to Ontario in the early 2000s he brought the Challenger RT with him and a number of parts he had purchased to 'restore' the car. The Challenger had suffered some lower quarter, trunk drop off, and front inner fender rust over the years. A local body shop carried out the installation of the partial panels and repainted the car in base/clear. The body work and paint completed are only adequate and simply do not do the car justice. In addition they missed some pinholes in the driver's floor pan that should have been attended to.
When the car was painted the owner decided not to put a black stripe on the car and also did not have the side scoops installed although he did keep them for the car.
The car shows 116,000 original miles. The original engine has been gone though at some point and the original transmission has been rebuilt in the past. The frame rails and floors are solid with the exception of the pin holes in the driver's floor foot well. The paint is thick and not quite the right shade. The seat covers are intact but eventually should be replaced along with the door panels.
Factory AM radio is missing and the stock transmission oil pan has been replaced with a deep pan to reduce fluid leakage.
We encourage potential buyers to inspect or have the car inspected for them. Please feel free to ask your questions. Rick Simpson Cobourg, Ontario 905-373-7087 EST.
Selling Price does not include taxes or license fees. Transportation costs are to be paid by the purchaser.
