Description
Let's start with the obvious, a 4 Door Rally?? Weren't all Rally versions 2 door?
"The Rally version was developed specifically for South Africa. It differs from the Continental version in retaining the standard 1300 engine and having four door coachwork. The engine difference is minor: the single choke carburettor version used here is less than 2kW down on the overseas Rally version but has more torque.
The South African Rally gets some useful extra equipment, including rev counter, oil pressure gauge, electric clock, cigar lighter, sports steering wheel, driver door mirror, and other items, plus "70" low-profile radials on ventilated sports type wheels" - Car Magazine October 1976
This little gem is a "barn find", having last been registered in 1999 when it was parked in a garage and never moved again. The odometer shows 81,050km, and judging by the overall integrity of this car, it is highly likely that this is the true mileage.
The paintwork is 100% original with the only sign of a touch up showing on the bonnet. I have managed to restore some of the shine back to the paint and I think it will come up even better with some more effort. There are scratches and minor dents around the car as well as spots where the paint has polished through. Patina vs. restored - the age old dilemma?!?!
The original paint shows the body to be extremely straight with no repairs evident. There are three small dents on the roof which will come out with PDR as the paint isn't broken. There is NO rust on any of the panels or the floor area, with the only rust being inside the boot - a hole the size of a 10c piece.
The rear bumper has a ding in it and the spare wheel and jack are currently not with the car. I can source replacements if required.
A large boot spoiler was fitted when I bought the car which I have since taken off. It has left two 5mm holes on the top of the boot lid and 5 more on the lip. Easy enough to fix or refit the spoiler which can come with the car. My thought was to vinyl wrap satin black on the bonnet and boot lid and polish up the rest of the car - its only original once!
The interior of the car is still in really good original condition. The seats and door cards have scrubbed up nicely and are also original material. No tears in the seats and no speaker holes in the door cards. Carpets and headlining are also original and intact, with no holes or stains. The dashboard has a few cracks and all gauges and electricals work. The seat runner on the drivers seat will need some attention as it is not locking into place at the moment.
Mechanically, the car is good as well. The carburettor has been rebuilt and fuel system flushed. The engine was serviced, new timing belt fitted and the brake system completely rebuilt. A new clutch has been fitted and the gearbox overhauled. Some suspension work has been done, new tyres fitted and the car runs and drives well.
Rally versions of the little 128 are highly sought after - especially in 2 door form, as they were never built in large numbers. The four door version was built in small numbers for the South African market, and far less were built than the 2 dour counterpart. There are very few left and I'm pretty sure this will be the only one in Australia!
Happy to answer any question and supply more photos via Dropbox link if you message me your email address. The car comes with all the import papers required to register if you want to go with full Rego. Much easier and quicker to put straight onto Club Rego though.
You are bidding to buy, not to view. Payment via EFT in full prior to collection. I can help with vehicle shipping at buyers cost.
