Description

Sophie, 1966 Fiat 1500 Cabriolet
Stunning Peacock Blue on white and grey with a tan top.
1.5 Litre, 5 Speed, Power disc brakes, Tach, Bucket Seats, all factory correct.
Imported from Italy and sold in California this car ended up in Arkansas.
I purchased the car in 2014 and brought it to Long Island NY.
Having a passion for these cars and having restored several over the last 20 years I felt this car might be a worthwhile project.
When the car arrived from shipping it was apparent this car was solid through and through. I felt lucky having bought the car sight unseen. At that time the car needed everything. Motor was out, trans was out in pieces, no interior, no top or frame work for the top, most of the trim was missing, gauges were all broken and faded, glass was missing, electrical had been chopped up and the list goes on.
Fortunately over the years I saved everything from parts cars and made so many great contacts here in the US and abroad to Poland, Nederland’s and of course Italy.
2 years, tons of research, tons of time spend correctly assembling this car, all missing parts were found, all broken parts replaced with vintage or factory correct, this car is now complete and is a fantastic driver quality car, so fun to drive, so fun to show, people love this car so much it won 2nd place best in show for 2018 at the Italian car show in Stony Brook Long island.
Let’s start;
1966 Fiat 1500 cabriolet.
Body and Paint. I stripped the car of the remaining few items and sent the car out for paint to a great shop here on LI. Media blasted the outer panels, the car was so solid I was beyond myself with joy. Anyone who knows these cars knows they are seldom found that way unless always cared for. Anyway, the original color formula was mixed and sprayed and as we see the car looks Amazing, my favorite color on these cars and also a very rare color on these cars. Top colors were red or white, this is the second one of these out of several hundred I have seen over the years dressed in Peacock Blue.
Interior, all new and all factory correct. Carpets were custom made with the correct German Loop and correct Grey tone. Seats were imported from Italy from a custom shop that specializes in these cars. Door panels were custom made correct. The floor mats throughout were replaced and are all new including the Trunk.
1.5 litre engine, very strong, burns no oil, runs cool, oil pressure is perfect. This engine has not been rebuilt but actually has very low miles and needed nothing but TLC to get her running again. I did replace all minor surface gaskets and the front and rear main seals. I also replaced the timing chain, I bought it and figured why not, the old chain was ok but the new chain is in the car. The carburetor is brand new correct weber 34 DC. Ignition system is in perfect working order with many new parts. Fuel pump is new, filters, sending units, wires, motor mounts all new. The list goes on and the goal was to have a 100% factory correct car. We achieved our goal.
Transmission, love these 5 speeds and 66 was the first year for the 5 speed. So simple and yet so fun. This trans has all new synchro mesh, all new gaskets, bearings were perfect and I like the idea of keeping everything as original as possible when possible. Trans mount and flex mount to drive shaft are new. Trans shifts as it should with ease up and down the gears. Speedo cable is new.
Rear end, the rear was perfect but the seal needed to be replaced. All new shocks front and back.
Exhaust system, all brand new. I fitted the system with the correct hardware and even relocated the mounts by cutting and welding them into their correct locations for a perfect fit and a nice sound.
Brakes, all front brake pads are new, front disc calipers were professionally rebuilt, rear solenoids were replaced with new, and master cylinder is also new. The power booster, this thing works but it is a bit sticky. I’ve have had so many conversations with people who have dealt with these things and near everyone says……bypass it, it’s a pain in the ass, I agree and I am tempted to do so but it works and I spent 700 bucks having it rebuilt, it has a lifetime warranty so I am not yet ready to pull the plug. You can but that is up to you. In the meantime it works fine.
Wheels and tires, steel wheels were blasted and powder coated black, tires were imported from the UK and have the correct euro tread design. They handle well for skinny little sneakers.
Electrical, many many hours sifting through and sorting out all the bad wring and hack work, in the end I replaced the harness with a harness from another 66 cabriolet that was so good it is perfect. It was of course the perfect fit and there were no issues after install and test.
Gauges, all gauges have been worked on and are in working order, very simple systems and these are 50+ years old. Water temp, perfect, oil pressure is mechanical and works perfect. Gas works and also has a low fuel light that comes on when low. Gen light works, all switches and related functions work as they should from wipers to interior light to heater fan. Directional and high beams work perfect. All lights work.
Canvas top is new, soft tan color.
Glass, all factory correct Vignale Glass. Windshield and side glass are all in terrific condition.
Bright work, most chrome is in nice shape for a driver quality car. All SS trim is perfect fit, correctly assembled with factory connectors and buffed up for a nice shine.
Under the hood, in the cabin, under the car this car is just a solid good driver. I took my time finding and resourcing everything I could to get the car complete. Now that it is complete it could be restored to perfection very easily. I have a top quality Cabriolet in my collection (Helen) and also have 3 other Cabriolet’s that still need attention (possibly for sale) to get them back on the road so, that is where my attention will go. Sophie will find a new home and be enjoyed for years to come. These cars are very simple, easy to work on and maintain. Park it for a month and she starts right up, no issues, go for a ride, drop the top and head into the Sunset. Happy trails.
