Description
I'll start off by saying this truck is wearingits original red & white paint with authentic 62 year old patina. It has never been wrecked, restored or re-finished. It's the"Custom-Cab" with rare wrap-around, big-back-window (instead of the morecommon small, flat rectangular rear-glass). No blind-spots when you look over the shoulder to merge lanes. It has deluxetrim such as chrome horn ring on the steering-wheel, chrome grill (notpainted body-color like on most models), chrome emblems, stainless-steelwindow-mouldings, a little extra trim on the interior, etc. It's a manual3-speed on the tree transmission, with what Ford called the"Mileage-Maker" 230 cubic inch 6-cylinder. No radio or antenna, but ithas other neat features.
It was fancy for its day still pretty basic by today's standards. No power-steering orpower-brakes (those weren't options on mostpickups backthen). It does have the long-lived, and indestructible Ford 9-inch rear-axle, so if aperson wished to install a Coyote motor, or (God forbid) aChevy LS-swap, it would definitely hold up to the added torque of amodern drivetrain. Eventhis inline-6 is really no slug. With 139 horsepower, it getsup and goes decently! The axle is the optional 3:70 gear-ratio,so the engine isn't screaming at excessive RPMs going down the highway. Thewide-whitewalltires are bumpy, old bias-plys with plenty of weather-checking, but theyhavenew inner-tubes in them, so never leak air-pressure. They're totallyfine for around town & to go to car-shows, but Iwouldn't go 80mph down the interstate on them or anything crazy. They do fine at 60mph.
Noair-conditioning. Ithas wing-vent windows & floor-vents which make things decentlycomfortable on a hot Summer drive. The heater and fan-blower work. I don'tknow whatI'm failing to see here, but can't find any way to activatethe windshield-wipers. I bought newfitted-upholstery for the seat and door-panels in the originalred vinyl-color, as well as installed a re-production moulded-rubberfloor-covering in the cab. It's got a brand new carburetor, so it hasanautomatic choke now, and startsup well. I was able to retro-fit it to accept the original oil-bathair-cleaner. 96,625 miles on the odometer and counting (I've still beendriving it around, but willpark the vehicle once it gets a bid, or someone agrees to purchaseit). The engine runs great with novalve-ticks, knocks or blue-smoke out the tailpipe (it doesn't burnoil, orleave any fluid-drips on my driveway). I just changed the oil andfilter, as well as put new antifreeze in the cooling-system. The brakefluid is all flushed out and freshly filled as well.
Ireplaced the old generator with a brand newmodern one-wire alternator for reliability. The truck also hasnewerspark-plugs, plug-wires, distributor cap & rotor, a new fuel-pump,new water-pump,new fuel-filter, brand new Champion brand 3-core aluminum radiator(again forreliability, and the engine stays nice & cool), new fan-belt andhoses replaced, brand new brake master-cylinder and slave-cylinders at all 4 corners, new brake-shoes, new brake-hoses and lines. New fuel-lines and hoses. There's no slop or play inthewheel-bearings, knuckles or king-pins. The tie-rod ends are new, and Ijust did an alignment on it. I also just set all the rocker-arms forvalve-tappet-clearance on the engine, soit's all tuned up and ready to roll.
The clutch is goodwithno slippage. Transmission shifts through thegears smoothly (no synchro in 1st gear as they were just manufacturedthatway). The previous owner was 96 years old, and recentlypassed away, but he owned the truck for most of its existence before Igot it (I wish he could take it for a ride now that it's got a new leaseon life mechanically). Some of the glass has some minormilking; no chips orcracks. You kinda have to slam the doors, and they open hard. Iinstalled a new muffler & replaced most of theexhaustsystem. The manifold might have cracks, as it's got the typical6-cylinder "farty" exhaust sound, but there's no smell of fumes in thecab when driving down the road. The headlights, brakelights, and taillights all work. Turn-signals are not currently working(I just use hand-signals out thedriver's window with my arm for now) that could be a flasher-relay orsomething simple. I just haven't gotten around to looking into it. Thegas-tank is in greatshape with no pinholes or rust. Ihad it steam-cleaned/boiled out & pressure-tested at a shoprecently. Itneeds a new fuel sending-unit float in order for the gauge to work onthe dash. Otherwise all the other instruments including oil-pressure,temp-gauge,speedometer, and battery light work as they should.
Somethingworth mentioning is that some of the rear suspension spring leaves arebroken. Not knowing theintentions of the next owner (whether wanting to lower/slam the truck,or lift it up & turn it into a 4x4) I just left them asthey are. The vehicle is completely drivable, though I just wouldn't recommendhauling a huge, heavy load inthe bed until they were replaced with new ones. There are dents/dingsthroughout the body, as it was used for its intended purpose a pickuptruck. The frame is very solid. There are rust holes in the lower tailgate,pin-holes in the box-floor (I installed a bed-mat to make it neat),bed-corners, cab-corners, door-bottoms and inner-fenders. Many"restored" vehicles are chalked-full of plastic body-filler, hiding amultitude of these things. With exceptions of the driver'srunning-board, and lower fenders(which I welded in new patch-panels for) this truck's wearing all ofits originalrust so what you see is exactly what you're getting. Thereshouldn't be reason for surprises if you've read my description and viewat allthe pictures. This would be a great candidate forrestoration, however it seems a shame not to just leave it original inmy eyes. I ran a buffer over the whole body when I first got thetruck to clean up the staining on the paint a bit, but didn't put anytype of wax, silicone or clear-coat on it, so the next owner can preserve the patinahowever they so-choose.These old vehicles are only factory once, and this truck has realcharacter (whilestill looking classy, and not just like some tasteless fake-patinarat-rod heap-o-junk). It gets lots of attention just the way it is. You just don't see unrestored originals like this much anymore, whichto me is what's so neat about the vehicle.
I've got agood, clear title for it, registered in my name. Other than thequestionable old tires and windshield wipers not functioning, I wouldn't hesitate to hopin this thing and drive it anywhere at a moment's notice (just use Rain-X on the glass if you're adventurous). Mechanically, it's very sound, reliable, and road-worthy, though. Just agood ole' truck that deserves to be driven and enjoyed!
Naturally, this vehicle is being sold As Is with no warranty. I can store it for areasonable amount of time if need be (for pick-up arrangements), butrequire a $500 security-deposit within 24 hours of listing's end, andfor the remainder of the purchase-price to be paid for in full within 10 days. Deposits are considered non-refundable, but I welcome anyone to cometake a ride in it, or have inspected before the auction's close. Ifhaving it shipped, I do have a couple of phone numbers forauto-transporters I've used over the years which I can pass along. Ican certainly provide pictures of front & back sides of the titleprior to payment, and will type up a bill-of-sale for the buyer.
The pictures depict smaller front tires mounted, and some with and without the bed-mat. They were all taken recently. The smaller front tires are in place currently, and the bed-mat is installed/included. I just wanted to show honestly the condition of the metal underneath.
