1978 Ford F150 Ranger Edition Supercab
This is a very rare Ford pickup truck. There were very few Ford F150's made with the 460ci motor.
This is a "Supercab" which equates to a 5 seater with 3 seats in the front and 2 "jump" seats in the back. All have Australian complianced seat belts and it was registered to legally carry 5 passengers which it did with comfort - including 2 kids over 165cm.
With the added "Ranger" trim package it makes it a very nice truck. It has just about everything you could want with an automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes and air conditioning.
This was a one owner F150 with a genuine 77,000 miles (123,919 kilometres) when I purchased it in 2010. The gent had passed away and I purchased it from his grandson who was a die hard Chevy guy and it was killing him to sell it but couldn't deal with driving a Ford - probably couldn't handle the power of the 460!
Prior to the truck coming over from the USA I had my mechanics go through it and service it and replace things that I would need dealt with so that I could just drive it here. One thing that needed attending to was the exhaust manifolds were leaking. Instead of spending the money on surfacing them I replaced them with brand new extractors. Many other new parts were done as well as a complete service.
I have used this vehicle for almost 4 years and added 156,877 kilometers to the truck. I won't say trouble free but I have certainly sorted out a lot of issues in that time including a lot of wiring clean up, replacing the factory management system with a good MSD box, sorting out carburetors, distributors etc, etc. Front tyres are basically new. Battery is fairly new. Two petrol tanks, one factory one and one extra large one.
This was my tow vehicle and it is fitted with a super heavy duty tow hitch (10,000lbs from memory), Reece receiver, small round 7 pin plug, heavy duty rear power for a winch connector, and inside a trailer breaking system (as well as a really old factory one that I never removed). This easily tows my 22' trailer with a car/equipment anywhere you want to go - it has made many, many trips to Melbourne and Sydney and everywhere in between. Easily tows a car up the range to Toowoomba, over Cunningham gap to Warwick, up Bulli Pass in Wollongong. she has seen a lot of the east coast.
Sad to see her go as she has taken me places and given me a lot of memories but I have only been using her once a month for the last 18 months and haven't used her at all in the last 5 months. With rego what it is I just can't justify having 3 x V8's registered.
It does come with its issues as it is 32 years old but as I said it has a lot of issues worked out. It has a bit of rust coming through the C Pillar and along the drivers roof seam. The dent in the bonnet was there when I got it, apparently a tree fell on it! Brakes will need some attention from sitting. Could do with a wheel alignment.
