• Same owner since 1996, dry California truck
• Final model year for seventh-generation F-series
• Out of all the F-250 trucks made in 1986, only 401 were painted in this color combination; only 147 of those were ordered with the XLT Lariat package
• 460 CID V-8 engine (code L) with four-barrel carburetor
• Borg-Warner T-19 four-speed manual transmission (code P) backed by a Sterling 10.25 with Traction-Lok and 3.55 gearing (code C9)
• Dark Canyon Red exterior (code 51) with Medium Metallic Silver trim (code 1G)
• Canyon Red cloth/vinyl interior (code KD) with three-person, fold-down vinyl bench jump seat
• Air-conditioning, power steering, power brakes, tilt steering column, cruise control and a factory tachometer
• Eight-foot cargo bed, 155-inch wheelbase and 8,800 GVWR
After more than 10 model years leading the pickup sales chart, Ford was not about to surrender its crown for 1986. This all-original “Bull Nose” truck spent most of its life in dry, sunny, southern California. It is highly optioned with rarely-seen colors.
Ordered in September 1985 then made two months later in Ford’s Claycomo, Missouri factory, this truck was delivered that November to Rodman Ford in Foxboro, Massachusetts. Out of roughly a million F-series trucks built in 1986, this example is one of only 401 painted in this color combination; and of those, one of 147 ordered with the top-of-the-line XLT Lariat package.
Shortly after taking possession of it in 1985, the original owner moved to dry and sunny southern California. This truck has spent most of its life there. Along with the best mechanical options, rare colors and top-of-the-line trim options, this truck was also ordered with the Convenience Group and Handling Package. The truck’s windows were also tinted while in the Golden State, which preserved the interior, especially the crack-free dash.
The original Dark Canyon Red paint (code 51) and Medium Silver Metallic (code 1G) trim are in satisfactory order, while the body is straight and solid. The engine bay is good, original condition and the chrome front and rear corrugated bumpers look good and fit tightly to the body. There is a dent on the passenger side but the cargo box is in overall good order.
This truck rolls on Thunderer Ranger A/T light truck tires, size 265/75R16 at every corner. The tires are in very good order and are mounted on steel wheels with white rings and chrome center caps. The wheel covers are in good, original shape and lend a business air to the truck’s appearance. It has an eight-foot cargo bed, a 155-inch wheelbase and a 8,800 GVWR.
The truck was ordered with a 460 CID V-8 engine (code L) with a four-barrel carburetor, part of Ford’s 385 series engines. This motor is backed by a Borg-Warner T-19 four-speed manual transmission (code P) putting power to a Sterling 10.25 rear axle with Traction-Lok and a 3.55:1 rear end (code C9). The first version of the 10.25 axle is colloquially known as “short pinion-yoke.” Up front, the F-250 used an eight-lug version of the Dana 44 Twin Traction Beam (TTB), called the Dana 44 TTBHD.
Driver convenience features include air-conditioning, cruise control, power steering, power brakes and a sliding rear window.
Inside, the truck has an all-original interior and is in done in Canyon Red (code KD) with a cloth bench seat followed by a vinyl, full-width, fold-down jump seat. The interior is all original and in great shape, no rips, no cracks, no holes. When stowed out of the way, there is almost another 30 cubic feet available for storage. The bench seat is satisfactory while the jump seat looks great. The red carpet and headliner are in similar shape, as does the Ford two-spoke steering wheel with its woodgrain trim. The dashboard looks fine, has its own set of woodgrain inserts and comes complete with full instrumentation, including a factory tachometer but the fuel gauge is inoperable. A floor-mounted shift lever and a Pioneer AM/FM stereo with CD player complete the interior.
For 1986, the F-Series saw few substantial changes. To streamline production, all vehicles received a full set of instruments (with only the tachometer remaining optional). Two-tone paint options were revised, as Ford deleted options that painted the roof and/or cab with the accent color. To simplify ordering and production, Preferred Equipment Packages were paired directly with trim levels, reducing the number of distinct options; traditional stand-alone option packages remained in place.
If you’re looking for a comfortable and capable hauler, you couldn’t go wrong with this Ford F-250. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today and check it out for yourself.
