Description
Unique and amazing opportunity. I go to a lot of car shows and you just never see another one anywhere!
If you buy this car be prepared for lots of conversations with anybody and everybody who stops to look at it.
This 1966 Ford Fairlane Wagon is so rare here in Australia. Its in fantastic largely original condition and has traveled 53,000 miles - now I dont have all the documentation to support this but it has all original ball joints and until recently still had its original brake shoes - they were only replaced when the linings came away from the backing plates! I have the original unused spare wheel and whitewall cross ply tyre as well as another spare wheel with radial tyre.
Its had 2 RWCs done since landing in Australia - the first required one suspension rubber boot and a new cap for the washer bag, the second, just a few months ago, it required a new rear number plate light bulb - and that's it!
It drives just like a brand new 66 Fairlane should - smooth, powerful with no rattles or squeaks. There is a small vibration in the dash that I have been reluctant to chase as the dash and dash cover are in such good condition. It has manual steering that is quite direct and there is no free play in the steering box and manual brakes that stop the car as they were designed to do. Its an absolute joy to drive and never fails to put a smile on your face.
This is the wagon that inspired the design of the XR, XT series of Australian wagons.
Since taking ownership 4 years ago, I have had it stored either in my sealed shed or at the Shepparton Motor Museum. Its done 6000 miles in that time, taking the mileage from 47,000 to 53,000, mainly to shows or for special occasions. Just before I purchased it it had a brand new windscreen fitted, new venetians custom made and colour matched, and the front clip and rear tailgate painted along with the front seat recovered in original NOS material. I have a roll of this material should the next owner ever need it. It has new brake shoes all round, new wheel cylinders and the drums machined, a new 3 core radiator and high volume water pump fitted, new high output alternator (I still have the original) and a period correct Mustang-type aircond kit professionally fitted.
As you can see from the photos, it has the optional factory chrome and stainless steel roof rack fitted and the optional factory warning light flasher in the glove box (where the hidden ipod compatible remote stereo is also located). It also is the first year of Ford's famous two way tailgate that opens down and to the side.
I have collected some new old spares and some second hand parts that go with the car and these include tail lights and lenses, new mounting kit for the roof rack and brand new chrome and rubber rear bumper over riders / steps that allow people to access the rear without climbing on the bumper bar. I have new tailgate hinges and handles too so I have all the hard to get parts should the new owner want to restore the car. It doesn't need to be restored - its great just the way it is now and it drives and shows beautifully.
The two old surfboards that sometimes live on the roof racks go with the car too - the blue one comes from the early 70s while the long board is from the 80s.
The only minor problems with the car are:
1. A couple of very small bubbles in the paint at the left hand side bottom of the tailgate - a simple job for a panel beater/painter - the paint has not cracked.
2. The original head liner is in great condition apart from 3-4 small tears near the top of the tailgate. They have never worried me.
3. The oem Autolite 2100 two barrel carby has a flat spot when cold - I suspect the auto choke needs some attention. Again it has never bothered me as the car starts first time, warms up quickly and is very smooth and powerful once at operating temperature.
4. There is some heat or sun damage to the spare wheel cover in the right rear inside panel in the luggage area - I have managed to source a rare second hand one in very good condition from the USA that just requires colour matching if the new owner wants to do this - again i like the patina of the car so have steered clear of making unnecessary changes.
This is a very rare, unique, low mileage collector quality original car. I can almost guarantee that you that you won't see another one - certainly you will be the only one at every car show you go to. Its super reliable and doesnt need anything spent on it - just buy and enjoy.
Car has been registered in Victoria but is currently on Club Permit - recent RWC so easy to register if that's what you want to do.
For more information, call Steve on 0419 332 949. Car is located in Dookie near Shepparton/Benalla, an easy couple of hours drive from Melbourne. Inspections of the car welcome.
I purchased this car to keep forever but a recent property purchase, health scare and a partly built hot rod that needs space means one of my two classic cars has to go. If this one doesn't sell, then my 65 Galaxie Coupe with heaps (and I mean heaps) of new and second hand parts will be listed instead - in other words, don't call me with ridiculous low ball offers - it's a waste of your time and mine. This Fairlane Wagon is a great opportunity for someone who wants a classic low mileage original and very cool rare car.
I am a long time Ebay user with 100% feedback so bid with confidence.
