Description

1978 FORD XC COUPE 351C
THE ENGINE is a 5.8ltr 351 Clevelend engine, fully rebuilt, balanced and blue printed by Bill Mann in 1994. Engine block was fully bathed and crack tested prior to being shot peened and all dags removed and oil galleries opened. The crank is a 4MA crank that underwent the same treatment plus balancing and it pushes the highest quality TRW pistons (can't remember if they are flat top or not) with molly rings. The cam shaft was designed, machined and tested by Bill Mann's own performance centre (Springwood) and is of a 'solid' design and as such has roller lifters rather than the old 'pump up' style lifters under the push rods. A set of 4V heads were fully match ported and polished, flow tested and then fitted with stainless steel valves and fully adjustable Yella Terra roller rockers that were specifically selected to run with the solid specs of the cam shaft and an Edelbrock inlet manifold was also match ported and polished to the heads and internally flow tested to ensure accurate distribution of fuel. This is topped with a 780 double pumper Holley carburettor which is fed by a Holley electric high volume fuel pump and 1/2 inch fuel lines from the customised fuel tank. The ignition system is full amplified electric system comprising of a Crane 'Fireball' ignition amplifier, Mallory High Ignition 10000 volt coil and Mallory Uni-Lite distributor (which as mentioned previously is machined to match) The exhaust system starts with a set of custom built which extractors are of ‘tuned length’, fitted with collectors and the pipes are all 2 and a half inches front to back and mandrel bent for high flowing performance.
THE DRIVELINE is where it gets a little interesting. It has a ‘700R4’4 speed manualised automatic with a 2800 stall converter, custom built and balanced with a custom 4 inch driveshaft and the Ford 9 inch differential fitted with 4.11 gears with additional clutches. Wheels are Centreline Hellcats and were actually imported from the USA in 1995 on a special order and they must have sparked some interest here because I’ve seen they are now available here in Australia. They are 15”x 7” at the front and 15” x 81/2 at the rear with 235 and 295 Yokohama tyres fitted respectfully.
THE INTERIOR was re-upholstered in a silver/grey material with a similar hounds-tooth style to update the vehicle yet leave it’s original styling. The gauges are all Autometer Ultralite Gauges and were fitted into an original configuration.
THE BODY required little repair when prepared for spraying and was surprisingly clean and generally rust free when taken back to bare metal. It was painted in 2 pack Glasurit paint, the colour is ‘High Opacity White’ and has been accentuated with a custom silver/grey instead of the original satin black.
THE BOTTOM LINE is the vehicle was built as a ‘drag racing streeter’ though it never actually went into competition. It was taken to Willowbank in 1998 and pulled a 12.4 second quarter mile pass at 128 miles per hour in the full street trim including the tyres (as seen in the pictures). When first built, it was dyno tested on the bench to flow over 570hp and then again in the vehicle and goes close to placing 490hp to the bitumen and has the potential to do low 11’s down the quarter.
