Description
1965 Mustang. California “C” code car. (Original 4 speed) This car was bought by No Limit Engineering in 2001 to be a test car. This car was chosen because it was 100% rust free, and has never been in an accident. So, it was perfect to measure. It was the test bed for their SC1-IFS kit for early mustangs.
The chassis development included a new designed front suspension, with tubular control arms and RideTech TQ coil-over shocks. This uses a SN95 Mustang power rack and pinion and includes a custom formed front sway bar. Wilwood Pro spindles and custom steering arms. The factory spring buckets are removed and the new inner braces firm up the front. (this is now a standard No Limit IFS package). The rear suspension is a custom fabbed Torque Arm suspension with two lower links, a center Torque Arm, and a long, low mounted panhard bar. A custom formed sway bar matches the front for roll stiffness. The rear RideTech TQ coil-overs are in the trunk, mounted with rocker arms. This provides easy tuning and a smooth ride with extra travel. The floor was braced with weld in subframe connectors and a nicely fitted 4-point bar (great for belt mounts).
The brake system starts with an Electric Hydroboost master from ABS brakes. This is the ultimate in performance power brakes. All new plumbing with braided stainless Flex linesCheck valves and adjustable proportioning valve. Wilwood 13” 6 piston front brakes and 12.19” 4 piston rear brakes. This car will stop on a dime and give you change.
Power comes from a Ford W 302 built to 306” 10-1 compression with a mild hyd. Cam and aluminum heads. Edelbrock intake topped with a FITech EFI system. Trans is an AOD with a 2300 stall converter and Hurst shifter. The rear axle is a Ford 8” with 3.50 gear ratio and a True Track diff. (Currie Ent) For the EFI there is a custom aluminum fuel tank with an intank Walbro pump and Aeromotive regulator. The accessory drive is a Vintage Air Front Runner with a Turn One P/S pump, a Powermaster 115 amp alternator, and a Sandon A/C compressor. Cooling is from a custom 3 core aluminum radiator and a Spal 16” electric fan in a custom shroud. The engine puts 315 HP and 308 ft/lbs to the tire. It is very spirited, still drivable and gets about 22 mpg on the hwy. (overdrive helps)
The body is mostly stock. It was stripped in 2002 and the full underside was Line-X coated. The Hood, Trunk lid, side fins and Bumpers are all Maier Racing Carbon Fiber. The hood has additional Aero-Latch latches installed. The front lower valance is a Mustangs Unlimited ‘glass unit. Paint is Wimbledon White and clear over the carbon. All of the trim was blacked out.
The interior is also ‘close’ to stock-is. The rear seat is deleted (roll bar) and the front seats are Pro Car buckets. Center console was custom fabbed in aluminum. The steering column is and IDIDIT tilt column. Pedals were updated for comfort. The car has Vintage Air heat-A/C-Defrost, Classic Instrument gauges, Retro-Sound stereo and New Relics P/W. The headliner, door panels, and kick panels are new.
The GOOD. This car is super solid and fun to drive. GoodGuys events, Optima’s Cars and Cones tour, SCCA Cam-T class, down the Dragon or just to the store, it’s a great car. Everyone who drives it smiles and laughs. It is very forgiving, we call it a “Point and Shoot” car. It makes sloppy drivers look skilled. Everything done to the car has been done very well, and everything works as it should. It comes with two sets of wheels. 1) 17 x 9” NRZ with BFG SC-2 tires (80%)- on the car. 2) 18 x 9 Forgeline three piece billit wheels (light) with BFG Rival-S tires (60%) – AX and track day.
The BAD. OK the car isn’t perfect. The paint is 5 years old, and has survived many auto-cross laps. There are a few cone scratches on the rockers. The passenger side front wheel opening has chips on the edge. The interior needs to be finished up. Carpet and covering the console. The trans has a small leak from the tailshaft. It leaks a nickel size drop if parked for a week+. Some of the black paint on the trim has a few marks/scratches. The trunk key lock is broken (have the new one, but the keys don’t match)
I’m sure I forgot things, like the RideTech harnesses and triple adjustable shocks, and new Painless wiring harness, but you get the idea. It would cost 50k+ to build one like this, and you’d have to find a rust free, accident free car to start with.
