Available and up for your consideration at JLD Auto Group is this 2006 Ford Mustang Saleen S281 Extreme Convertible! This is no ordinary Mustang having been given the 'Saleen' treatment, and beyond that, this example is the 'Extreme' variant of the S281 Mustang, being only 1 of 29 Extreme Convertibles produced. Specifically, only 4 Extremes were made in this specification, wearing 'Vista Blue' exterior paint over a 'Dark Charcoal' Leather interior. This Extreme is also optioned with the Saleen Chrome Alloy wheels, as well as the Saleen Speedster Tonneau cover, providing a Speedster-like rear seat delete appearance. The original window sticker also indicates a final factory option of the presence of Michelin Pilot Sport II Front/Rear tires.
While optional equipment is limited on this example, this is due to the extensive upgrades completed as part of the Saleen 'overhaul' of this Mustang. The 4.6L V8, normally included in early S197 generation Mustangs, is supercharged with a Saleen Series VI integrated screw type supercharger, pushing power output to a whopping 550hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. To handle the increased performance, the engine was fitted with forged aluminum pistons, forged steel connecting rods, a forged steel crankshaft, and ported aluminum cylinder heads, all accompanied by a dual stage water-to-air intercooled system and a performance dual-core radiator, all by the hands of Saleen. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission and a Saleen Maxgrip Differential with a 4.10:1 gear ratio, enabling blistering speeds--especially for back in 2006. A balanced aluminum driveshaft is present as well, as is a high performance clutch and lightweight aluminum flywheel. To better manage this performance on the road, Saleen front and rear springs, front struts, rear shocks, and a front sway bar are all installed. To provide the job of stopping, 15" Saleen slotted and ventilated front 6-piston disk brakes are put to the task.
A host of exterior and interior upgrades have been installed on the S281 Extreme, both for cosmetics and functionality. An aluminum hood with heat ventilation is present on the front, along with Saleen side skirts, door-cladding, and front/rear fascias present elsewhere. Carbon diffusers have been installed in the front and rear for increased aero management, along with a rear wing. HID headlights provide better nighttime visibility, while 20" chrome seven spoke alloy wheels give the car 's exterior some flash. As for the interior, louvered headrests mimic the iconic Saleen logo, fitted onto Saleen leather sport seats. Elsewhere, sets of Saleen decals and badges adorn surfaces such as the top of the windshield, steering wheel logo, bezels, and floor mats. On this example, an aftermarket back-up camera is also present for enhanced convenience and to help avoid damaging the carbon rear diffuser.
All in all, this S281 Extreme Convertible is a rare example of a special Mustang. This particular example is also accompanied by extensive documentation, including its original Window Sticker and Certificate of Authenticity. The car's original Books, Cloth Top Boot, and 2 Keys are also included. With 10k miles, this Saleen straddles a fabulous line between being both a great show car along with a special piece of Saleen history.
