1971 HQ Monaro Coupe GTS 308
I've had this car since the 1980s, third owner, last registered 2002.
Has spent most of its life with me, unused in a shed.
The good bits
- Genuine GTS
- The orginal colour is the desirable Lone O'ranger (as shown on the ID plate in the photo)
- Black interior
- 308 original engine, in great condition (original bore size)
- It is very complete inside and out, engine running well and very drivable
- Not registered, but easily and safely drive it home with a VicRoads permit
- Rust free floors, rust free roof, body panels readily restorable
- Panel fit is excellent over the whole car
The not good bits
- Requires a full external and interior restoration (but a great place to start from)
- Only minor rust in usual HQ Coupe places. See pictures of visible rust areas (largely left side, lower corners of front and rear guards and LH door frame corner, and very minor lower LH corner rust below rear windscreen, and RH plenum chamber below windscreen.
- It is a cut and shut from the 1970s, but it's been done well. Once you get past that and realise if you add new outer sills (to remove external cuts below paintwork) and tidy up the rear floor weld line, the cut and shut would become completely invisible. And no it doesn't move as you drive it (yes many have asked that question!) its a very tight body for a Q coupe.
- the Aussie four speed needs adjusting - sometimes 1st gear won't engage easily from a stop.
- original power steering has some noise it in, as fluid drained out over the years and needs a bleed.
Non original bits:
a) originally a trimatic, converted to Aussie four speed gearbox,
b) has ford nine inch LSD diff, with original drum brakes
c) has widened original steel sports rims, with original trims
d) non original stereo and speakers
e) dual 2.5" stainless exhaust system in great shape
f) Engine has a TQ30 camshaft, and Non original air cleaner, otherwise standard.
g) Exterior chrome has been painted (but will polish up fine). The bumpers may have been sandblasted - not sure.
h) Vinyl roof has been removed, and obviously the external paint colour is not original (was painted in the mid eighties)
- your bank deposit of $1,000 is required within 48 hours to secure your win, or it will be re-listed on day three!
- full payment is required within 7 days (email me to arrange)
- viewing is recommended and available on Sat-Sun
It would appear the chassis has been replaced in the 1970s at the time of the cut and shut, as the chassis no is indicating a HX number
So while the body ID plates have never been off the car, and engine is original (5 digit serial no. Reflecting an early Q 308), the chassis is not number matching to the body compliance plate.
Here are the numbers for your own research: (from pictures)
80837QJ305673 VIN skinny plate
BHX23833A Chassis number
BHQ17707M Compliance plate
017990M Body ID plate
17990 Factory hand written pen marking on firewall near heater box (visible under the factory black paint)
It seems that many people want me to discuss details of the car by phone to do deals, swaps and other shonkies. - Please do not ask me to call you on your mobile to drag me into your world.
I will only answer technical questions about the car, and only via email, so please email your questions to me, and I will provide you an answer in detail pretty quickly.
The deposit of $1,000 is non-refundable, so please take the opportunity to inspect the car prior to winning the auction.
The auction is to buy, not to inspect.
The car is for sale elsewhere and the auction may be ended at any time.
