A proxy auction allows you to bid the MAXIMUM that you are willing to pay and eBay will do the rest.
Your bid will only go up incrementally to an amount just above someone elses bid until the auction ends. Your bid will not increase unless it has to and many people get the item for less than their maximum bid. If however, you are "OUTBID", eBay will notify you by email. At that point you can make the decision as to whether you want to increase your maximum bid.
Also: If you are new to eBay, or you have never bid on a larger purchase, eBay may not allow you to bid prior to contacting them. Don't wait until the last minute to be approved!
For those of you who wish to feel more comfortable about buying a vehicle over the internet, please either arrange to come to town and inspect the car yourself, or hire a local company to do it for you.
