Description
1966 JAGUAR "Birchfield SS" 4.2 litre Roadster
(1938 Jaguar SS100 replica)
Here is a beautiful aluminum bodied 1938 Jaguar SS100 replica.
This car was built in England by a small company that no longer exists named Birchfield, in 1987. Only 22 were ever produced, 14 of which were completely built and assembled by Birchfield themselves, with the others sold as home builds. Of the 14 built at the factory, this was the only one made in a left hand drive configuration, with a manual gearbox. All of the others made at the factory were right hand drive, and automatic (from the donor XJ6). This car having a transmission from a 1966 Jaguar saloon, meant that Birchfield registered as a 1966 Jaguar.
Unlike most SS100 replicas (with fibreglass panels using either a Volkswagen, or Pinto as a donor), these used all aluminum bodies, and all Jaguar mechanicals - which made for a lightweight, high performance Jaguar roadster.
The car has driven less than 5,000 miles since it was made, and I had it recommissioned at Reg Beer Coachbuilder CMC Enterprises here in Ontario, Canada last summer (work is listed below). It is currently licensed, on the road (weather permitting), with its' clean bill of health and driving extraordinarily well. A very visceral experience to drive such a light roadster with that power, mated to the 4 speed overdrive transmission. Very nice car to drive, and included with the car is the original build sheet, and all relevant data.
