Description
1997 JAGUAR
XJ6 VANDEN PLAS (X300) - 36K MILES - BLACK EXTERIOR/CREAM LEATHER NO RESERVE - For those asking to end the auction early, the price is $10,800 (price it was just listed for locally). Garaged its
entire life, no rust anywhere. Original black paint has a rich, deep
shine. Close to $70K MSRP new in 1997 ($100K inflation adjusted).
XJ6 Vanden Plas models powered by a revamped 4.0L/245-hp AJ16 straight-six-cylinder engine. For ’96, the wheelbase was lengthened by 4.9 in. for these Vanden Plas models, a reprise of the old XJL models that also represented a much-needed increase in rear legroom. This car has been relegated to occasional weekend use and was rarely taken out of the garage over the years. The original owner passed away several years ago and was a patient at my brother’s practice. The owner’s wife offered the car to us for sale in 2013 (with 30K miles) and we have owned it since. A list of the maintenance items addressed since then is below. If you are looking at this ad, then I don’t need to tell you how rare and desirable a clean Vanden Plas model has become.
Overall Condition
As you can see from the pics, this X300 is one of the nicer examples still in existence and could possibly be the lowest mileage X300 Vanden Plas in the world (36K original miles). That being said, the car should be able to driven across the country today with absolutely no issues. Current NJ inspection and emissions w/ stickers valid until December 2017. There are no check engine or dash lights lit. All power windows/locks, tach, speedometer, lights, work fine.
Exterior
As mentioned, the car was garaged its entire life, senior owned, and driven gently. The paint is original and has a rich shine. There is a dent on the right rear passenger door but no noticeable crease and should pop out easily. Other than that, there are no dents, rust, or body damage. The VIN numbers match everywhere.
Interior
The interior is original and has held up remarkably well. The carpet is original and the floor mats are original shag Vanden Plas mats. The dash is perfect with no cracks and the trunk area is clean also. The interior is all original, including the OEM head unit still installed. This car comes with everything it came with day one; a full size spare with tire, lift jack, and owner's manual. There is a 6-disc factory CD changer in the trunk.
Mechanical
Recent work done since purchased with 30K miles in 2013 (approx. $2500 in recent work):
New front struts (Feb 2017)
New battery (June 2017)
Front and rear brakes replaced
New thermostat
Air conditioning serviced and working well
Fan belt replaced
Front window switch replaced
Headliner replaced (sagging in areas)
New radiator hose
Current issues we have not had time to address – radio and sunroof are currently not working (no diagnosis). Best case, it’s a simple electrical short or fuse. Worst case, you head to ebay and find the used radio/sunroof motor which seem to be readily available.
The car is 20 years old and will qualify for classic plates if you chose to go that route (although we use a standard plate on it with valid emissions stickers). Typically, $12/month will get you full coverage classic insurance.
History/Background
In 1995, Jaguar revamped the XJ40 and now called it the X300. Well, actually, they called them XJ6s and Sovereigns and Daimlers, but inside the factory they called them X300s. These cars have proven themselves to be extremely reliable vehicles. The X300 shares the basic structure and interior with the XJ40, but the body was redesigned and this long-wheelbase model was introduced as well in 1996. The extensive redesign that took place in the X300 explains why they are much more reliable compared to the previous XJ6s; Jaguar had finally reached a level of reliability similar to its competition after being bought by Ford. Major engine or transmission problems are extremely rare if any even in higher mileage examples.
