Description

The Jensen Interceptor took the British company to new heights when it hit the streets in 1966, with Italian styling by Touring (although the bodies were built by Vignale), a beautifully appointed interior and huge performance - all at a price that put the Interceptor well beyond the reach of most drivers. Jensen used Chrysler's V8 engine and Torqueflite three-speed transmission, rack and pinion steering and conventional suspension. The Interceptor was held in much the same regard as Aston Martin, Maserati and other similar bespoke GTs, and a four-wheel drive version, developed by Harry Ferguson, helped establish Jensen's reputation for technical innovation. The other noteworthy feature was the Interceptor's fashionable curved glass hatchback, with a parcel shelf covering the sizeable boot. Jensen constantly improved the Interceptor, with a revised interior the most striking feature on the Mark II of 1969. This is a quote from a book called 'The Jensen Inteceptor the Complete story' and it's from John Page one of the head mechanic at Jensen - 'There's no doubt in John Pages mind which was the best of the Inteceptors. ' A Mark II Interceptor with the Carter AVS carb is a very nice car, and if I was to buy one that's what I'd get.' The Interceptor has always had a strong following, with the combination of Italian good looks, luxuriously appointed interior and strong performance - with bulletproof and easily maintained mechanicals being an added bonus.
The interceptor has been featured in many movies etc including:
The Fast and the Furious 6 class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial" size="2" color="#202020">Top Gear class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial" size="2" color="#202020">The Saint class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial" size="2" color="#202020">You can also find another 3 pages of movies that it's been featured in: class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial" size="2" color="#202020">
There's also been a lot of celebrities owners, among these, actor Clark Gable, Cher, Frank Sinatra, racing driver Gerry Marshall, Joe Bamford, Jack Nicklaus, jazz musician Ginger Baker (Interceptors). Mitch Mitchell of the Jimi Hendrix Experience drove one, which also Jimi Hendrix himself is to have driven shortly before he died in 1970. Sir Cliff Richard, actor John Thaw and ex-heavyweight champ Henry Cooper, and nightclub-owner Peter Stringfellow have all owned Interceptors. According to BBC, comedian Eric Morecambe had his first heart attack in an Interceptor (and convinced a passer-by to chauffeur him to hospital in it.) Songwriter and vocalist Dave Walker of Fleetwood Mac also had an Interceptor, "which went like a rocket", as he says on their webpage.
This car has an interesting history. It was bought new and taken to Canberra by a British diplomat in the early 70's. He must have been quite important as the British government paid for it to be shipped over! The car was then sold to a co-worker who brought it to Sydney. The 3rd owner, a Sydney advertising exec met him at a party in the late 70's and made a deal to swap the Jensen for his GTR Torana plus 6 grand!
This car has an original interior with original 8 track stereo. The paint is in presentable, but not perfect. The black vinyl roof is flawless. The motor is strong, has good oil pressure and a clean exhaust. The gearbox works as it should. It has had a new fuel pump, fuel lines, radiator, battery, carburettor overhaul and she's been serviced recently. She needs a few things fixing to get it back on the road. The brakes work but the pedal is a bit soft, it probably needs new brake fluid and a bleed. A new headlight switch needs reconnecting (Lucas part supplied), There is a blow in the lhs exhaust. the electric window motors are working but the mechanism are sticky. The Interceptor was one of the fastest cars of it's day and the car still feels very rapid today. Getting into the Jensen's interior feels like stepping into an old casino. It's made up of 7 cow hides and is in original condition.
If you are looking for a show car this is not the car for you. This car needs someone that wants to fix the above issues and enjoy driving it.
