2004 Land Rover Defender 110 Stationwagon Td5
For sale is our 2004 Defender 110 stationwagon. I bought this in July 2014 as our only car from a dealer in Halifax, prior to me it has had one owner since new - Kent Police (see photo above). Since buying it I have made the following improvements/additions:
-Wright Off-Road soundproofing kit in front - the best there is, waterproof (some alternatives trap water and go soggy) and very good sound damping, but not cheap - over £400.
-Discovery 1.2:1 transfer box - raised the high ratio gearing from the Defender standard of 1.4:1, making much more civilised motorway driving. The 'box I fitted came from a V8 Disco 1 with 88,000 miles on it.
- 'Noisekiller' damping and other soundproofing/insulation on the rear floor and in the boot, along with fresh carpet.
- 'Audi Type 99' windscreen wiper relay - allows intermittent wipers at the timing you want, not the ridiculously fast every 3 seconds fixed timing of the LR relay.
- Boomslang headlamp relay kit - puts a relay between the headlamps and the flimsy LR switch, brighter and less chance of the switch melting.
- Puma clutch spring mod - replaced the Td5 clutch pedal springs with a circular type from the latest Defenders, much less effort to use the clutch now.
- Hawk remote central locking - all 4 main doors, actuator for boot door included in sale but not fitted (I'd lost it when I was fitting the others, wiring is in place, so not a big job to fit).
- Raptor Engineering Td5 centre console panel - the original had suffered from having police radios fitted.
The chassis is in very good condition, no rust to speak off and no 'recently applied Waxoyl' covering all sorts of horrors. The engine and transmission are strong - starts on the key as a Td5 should, pulls well, cruises happily at 70mph, high and low ratio boxes work, centre diff lock engages and disengages fine. Brakes strong, all electrics work, suspension and steering fine, no significant leaks (actually remarkably leak-free for a Land Rover and there are oil/fluids where they should be). In the year and a half I've owned it, two complete oil changes including both engine filters (with either genuine or OEM filters, no B*itpart allowed!) and Castrol synthetic oil in the engine, MT94 in the main box, EP90 in the transfer box and diffs.
The body and the trim are fair but they both show signs of 10 years public service. A passing glance at the body looks pretty decent but closer inspection and there are quite a few minor dents in various panels, but they add character to a Defender. No significant body rust and the doors are all fine - no sign of any rust inside when I fitted the door locking. Interior trim is fair - front seats are fine, carpet/mats are recent, back bench has some tears in the trim at the back (you can see in the photos), plastics are OK, usual quality Land Rover fit, instrument binnacle has cracked as they do - fitting the Raptor Engineering metal replacement was on my to-do list.
Service history - I don't have anything on paper *however* I contacted Kent police asking about it and they said (I have the email) that they service all their vehicles themselves and stick rigorously to Land Rover's service intervals and change anything that is required (timing belt, brake pads and discs, fluids, etc.) The actual service history has been archived by them, possibly if you were feeling brave you could make an FoI request for it I took their word for it, so to my mind it has a full service history. It certainly doesn't show any signs of neglect and I really can't imagine the police would risk not maintaining a vehicle correctly.
I had bought this Defender with the intention of keeping it long-term as our only vehicle (we used to have a V8 110 but that got too expensive to fuel) hence the soundproofing and comfort mods. Unfortunately my wife and daughter have laid down the law and demanded even more comfort, speed, air con and a stereo
MoT to end June 2016. Tax £290 per annum.
Located in Cambridge, viewing/test drive anytime between 9am - 4pm weekdays, saturdays.
