On 16-Jun-15 at 23:05:08 AEST, seller added the following information:MAZDA SP20 CAR REVIEW FROM GOAUTO WEBSITE
THE SP20 incorporates the general 323 facelift of February 2001, which includes reshaped headlight clusters now with integrated turning and hazard warning lamps and Mazda's five-point corporate grille. But it also gives the five-door hatch a good deal of the requisite 'attitude', with a large front bumper/airdam with foglights, crosshatched grille, side skirts, a low and high-mounted rear spoiler, chrome tailpipe extension and an excellent set of 16-inch alloy wheels. Mazda claims a racy SP20 decal confirms the ID.
Inside
SUPPORTIVE, bolstered front bucket seats are provided for SP20 occupants, with the front driver gaining seat cushion angle adjustment over the standard recline and fore/aft movements. All outboard seating positions have a height adjustable head restraint and a three-point seatbelt, however, the centre-rear passenger goes without. The front seatbelts also adjust for height. Dark, two-tone fabrics are used with contrasting "sports" accent panels. Cloth trim also makes it onto the doors. A high seating point assists with driver visibility.
Did you know?
The general 323 facelift included improved seatback design which replaced traditional support wires with a "Pluma flex board" that provides additional lumbar support and reduces the transmission of vibration to the occupant
THE all-too-typical 'sports' route of white-faced instrument dials and fake metallic/carbon fibre dash inserts are to be found in the SP20 cockpit on areas such as the dash and door switchgear, and gearshift surrounds. But it remains a clean, simplistic and functional area. The instruments (including tacho) within the hooded binnacle are informative and simple to use. Indeed, relatively large lettering is adopted for all levers, switches and meters ahead of the driver. An LCD trip meter/odometer is provided.

THE standard air-conditioning system is fully automatic and a pollen filter helps prevent unwanted particles entering the cabin. The heating and ventilation controls continue with the trio of rotary dials, with the central fan speed dial deliberately downsized to make finding it sight-unseen a simple task. Trouble is, the dial is too small for large, stubby fingers. Two large vents are provided on the dash fascia, with a further vent positioned at each extremity of the dash to further assist with driver and front passenger comfort.
Did you know?
The air-conditioning system features an anti-bacterial evaporator
A DEGREE of security is provided in the form of an engine immobiliser, remote central locking and power door locks. The "rolling code" immobiliser is a relatively sophisticated unit that makes it difficult to steal the car using a different or duplicate ignition key to the electromagnetic key provided. If a foreign or duplicate key is detected, the immobiliser will disable the fuel and ignition system. A cargo blind and illuminated entry with a delayed fade are also provided.
Did you know?
Whenever the key is inserted into the ignition, a transponder in the key issues an ID code to the car; if accepted, the immobiliser then issues a random number and both the key and the immobiliser perform calculations on the number. If the answers match, the vehicle fuel and ignition systems are enabled
Factory Engine Setup
AS the name suggests, a 2.0-litre engine powers the SP20. Driving the front wheels, the transversely mounted DOHC 16-valve inline four-cylinder '626' engine produces 98kW of power at 6000rpm and 178Nm of torque at 4500rpm. Engine features specific to this model include a vertical inertia charging system incorporated into the intake manifold to ensure high output over the entire engine-speed range. A knock sensor is used to improve fuel efficiency, though premium unleaded petrol is called for. Official government fuel economy figures point to 9.5L/100km on the city cycle and 6.6L/100km on the highway.
Suspension
THE SP20 uses the familiar MacPherson strut front suspension design and twin trapezoidal link arrangement at the rear. The latest 323 upgrade brought with it improvements to the suspension mounting system including an additional front transverse member and a stiffer front crossmember. Improvements to the rear cross lateral link and central mount aimed to further enhance vehicle dynamics. The SR2 suspension incorporates additional rear performance rods and heavier duty front and rear stabiliser bars (22mm diameter front, 15mm rear).
Brakes
DISC brakes are used at each corner of the car, with power assistance and an anti-lock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution also part of the standard package. The front ventilated discs are 258mm in diameter x 24mm width; the solid rear discs measure 261mm x 10mm. As per all 323 models, rigid front callipers and high-friction-coefficient brake pads are used to provide greater resistance to fade under high speed or high load conditions.
Did you know?
The new electronic brake-force distribution system is designed to differentiate between light and heavy loads and then allocate the ideal hydraulic braking pressure to counter rear wheel slip if it occurs.
Factory Wheels
LARGE 16-inch star-shaped alloy wheels are standard on the SP20, along with V-rated 195/50 R16 Yokohama Advan A460 tyres. A full-size alloy spare wheel is provided underneath the cargo floor.
Did you know?
A five-stud wheel mounting is used on the SP20, compared to four-point for other 323 models

IMPROVEMENTS to body rigidity, suspension design and the standard fitment of rear disc brakes and an ABS system point to relatively strong active safety characteristics in the SP20. The front occupants are provided with an airbag, seatbelt webbing clamps and pretensioners. The front seatbelts are also height adjustable to properly fit a wide range of people. The 323 has a rigid triple H structure (frames on the roof, body sides and floor structure) for strength. Interior components are ribbed or padded to offer some protection from head injury. The centre rear seating position is the only seat not to receive a head restraint and three-point seatbelt.
Did you know?
Active safety measures provide the means to avert accidents; passive safety features minimise injury risk once a collision becomes unavoidable
