Description
Note to bidders: We've relisted this nice car after the winning bidder wasn't able to carry through with their purchase obligation. Please folks, don't let Lil' Jimmy or your darling daughter Suzy-Q have access to your Ebay account unless you plan to pay for what they purchase. OK, enough rant! Here's the description again as it was presented last week:
1972
Mercedes Benz
220 Sedan
NO RESERVE – Goes to the highest bidder
VIN: 11501012100375
By the late summer of 1972 Janice Jones knew it was time for an upgrade. She’d owned her ‘63 Buick for many years and replacing it with a newer four-door was starting to make sense.
Driving past the local Mercedes Benz Dealer every day on the way to work in downtown Portland, Oregon this new 1972 220 sedan had caught her eye. For several weeks it sat highlighted there in the showroom and she knew it wouldn’t be for sale much longer. As a practical young lady, Ms. Jones felt any replacement for her beloved Riviera must possess a single, most important criteria: an automatic transmission. Though she loved the sportiness of a manual floor shift, she could not drive any vehicle with a clutch and steadfastly refused to learn! By September 20st the deal was consummated, and Janice had her new car. She promptly christened it “Gustav” and then fussed over the Mercedes, always giving it regular attention. She would own the 220 for the next 40 years.
In March 2012 “Gustav” was sold to his second owners, a couple also living in Portland. These folks brought the Benz north with them when moving here to Seattle a decade ago. Recently, it was passed along to us to find the next caretaker. My tech looked the rig over and replaced the fuel and oil filters (and changed the oil) after the car arrived at my warehouse. The driveline roto flex joint was also replaced. I’ve since driven the Benz sparingly, adding about 150 miles. All the photos you see here were taken on 10/28/2021 - between rainstorms!
It’s now time for “Gustav” to move on to a new home. What's pictured and being auctioned is a remarkably nice, virtually original gasoline-powered four-cylinder sedan. If you have questions or would like to inspect the Mercedes before the auction ends, please call me at (206) 914-1173 to set a meeting time at my Auburn, WA warehouse. My name is Mark.
CONDITION:
Little's changed since Ms. Jones bought the car all those years ago and my un-retouched photos really do tell the story. The exterior is in good, original condition. I’m not entirely sure the pale Oxford White paint is all factory original, but there’s no evidence of overspray on any of the trim or rubber parts. It still holds quite a shine. Small scratches and rock chips have been touched-up. A quick glance and you’ll see all the glass is good with the exception of a windshield crack (that hasn’t bothered me while driving). No attempt’s been made to update the remarkably decent stock engine compartment. Rust? I have found some well-encapsulated fiberglass repair done to both the drivers and passengers front floorpans, making them as solid as steel. There’s still some bubbling along the front passenger door’s lower edge, but I don’t think it's anything to worry about currently and could be addressed down the road as needed. The door seals, as well as the trunk seal, are in good order. Same goes for the original rubber mat still protecting the trunk (I removed it to show the trunk floor’s great condition). All four tires have at least 85% remaining tread.
Please look again at the interior pics. You’ll find the factory-original tan MB-Tex upholstery in excellent condition on both front buckets and the rear bench. No wear-through spots, cracking or seam splits on the seat bases, bolsters or backs. No sagging, broken springs either. The original headliner is intact without holes or tears. There are no dash cracks. I’m quite impressed with the dash gauges. They seem as clear and bright as the day this rig left Stuttgart five decades ago! The odometer reads 63,774 (I have no way to know what the actual miles are as it is a five-digit counter). Custom-fitted cocoa-fiber floormats have been installed front and back. I’ll be sure to include the original Mercedes manuals you see pictured in their plastic factory sleeve tucked away in the glove compartment when the car leaves my warehouse.
In addition to the positives, I always point out any issues I’ve encountered: It’s pretty unusual to find a vintage Becker or Blaupunkt stereo still in place, much less actually working. A modern Kenwood AM-FM/CD player’s been installed. Owing to the lack of need here in our mild climate, and as was common at the time, there is no factory A/C. The heater system is complete and works fine. The driver-side rear door latch is very sticky and can be hard to open. All four windows are crank-operated and move up & down. If you have questions or would like to inspect the Mercedes before the auction ends, please call me to set a meeting time at my Auburn, WA warehouse. As outlined above, my name is Mark, and my direct number is (206) 914-1173.
PLEASE BID WITH CONFIDENCE and know that you’re purchasing a very nice car from a respected Ebay seller. I want you to be happy with your purchase (and with me) and that’s the main goal! Please don’t be upset by a missed flaw or some unforeseen problem! No vintage vehicle is ever perfect.
Because of the amount of money involved in buying a vehicle, I require that new Ebay members with a feedback history of five or fewer transactions call or email before placing a bid. If I don’t have this initial contact, your bid may be cancelled. You’re welcome and encouraged to come by my Auburn, WA warehouse to inspect & drive the Mercedes. I encourage offers as many of my Ebay vehicles sell to smart “early bird” collectors that call and work out a deal prior to the auction’s end. I always reserve the right to sell during this period.
A Few Additional Terms and Conditions:
The entire purchase price is due by cash (in-person only), a wire transfer or other certified funds within seven days of the auction closing. I can accept credit/debit cards or a checking account ACH payment but will first need to send an invoice from our card/ACH processor (SQUARE) and will add the 3.5% card fee (or 1% for ACH) charged by them. Please remember you are bidding to buy, and I fully expect the winning bidder to fulfill their Ebay contract! You’re not bidding to hold or then come inspect and test-drive the vehicle later; you’re more than welcome to do this before the auction ends.
If you decide to have the Mercedes shipped to you, I can post a transport offer on the national Central Dispatch System for delivery after checking recent fees to your area. We usually then have a shipper lined up within a few days. The buyer pays the transporter COD when they arrive with the vehicle. No upfront deposit or other hassles.
The car can be stored free of charge at my location for up to two weeks after the auction ends assuming full payment has been received. After that period storage is $20 per day. The Mercedes is being sold as-is, where-is, with a free-and-clear Washington State Title. There are no title brands listed for negatives such as salvage history, theft recovery or rebuild. All information described above is based on the observed condition when the Ebay listing was placed. I've done my best to accurately describe the Benz and encourage bidders to contact me with questions before bidding.
