Description
Note to Bidders: We've relisted this car after the winning bidder wasn't able to carry through with their purchase obligation. Please folks, don't let 'Lil Jimmy or your darling daughter, Suzy-Q, have access to your Ebay account unless you plan to pay for their purchases. OK, enough rant! Here's the description again as it was presented last week:
1985
Mercedes Benz
300D Turbodiesel Sedan
Original Factory Manual Included
NO RESERVE past the opening bid
VIN: WDBAB33C9FA214234
Here’s another great running & driving vintage Mercedes I’ve acquired recently for our great Ebay bidders. This nice 300D Turbodiesel sold new in sunny California. The original owner brought the car here to Seattle many years ago, so it's spent the majority of its life driving our snow-free western Washington roads. From the moment I first laid eyes on this clean sedan, the level of respect and care given over the years was pretty obvious. Reluctantly, but as the result of a retirement move out of the country, the long-term owner turned the Mercedes over to find the next caretaker.
We occasionally lease vehicles to TV and film production companies when they're working here in the Seattle area. This 300D just returned to our warehouse this afternoon after it's starring roll on location shooting a film (as the main character's vehicle) and will appear on-screen the middle of next year when the movie is in theaters. I'll provide documentation and be sure to let the next caretaker know the release date so they can see their Mercedes up on the big screen. Now's your chance to own an actual, legitimate movie car!
I’ve got to tell you, having driven the 300D hundreds of miles before the movie shoot, what a treat! Where else will you find this kind of luxury, vintage style, safety, mechanical reliability AND terrific (25+MPG) fuel economy wrapped up in one nice ride? Please feel free to contact me with questions or to make an offer. My name is Mark and my direct number is 206/914-1173. You’re welcome and encouraged to make an appointment to inspect this outstanding boulevard cruiser here at my Auburn warehouse.
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION
Ever had a chance to spend time driving one of these cars with the uber-dependable 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine? The W123 chassis Mercedes constructed from the middle-70’s through the late 1980’s have always been a favorite of mine (and many consider this vintage to be the last hand-built, truly high-quality Benz). Take a look at the posted photos and I am sure you’ll agree. What you see is the result of a wash and vacuum only. It’s obviously been allowed to spend these many decades garaged because the overall exterior condition is very good. Climb over, under and throughout; I know you’ll come up smiling! Rust? Please, this Benz hates rust and you WON’T find a thing to worry about here. Yes, the Puget Sound area is famous for rain, but our winter roads are never salted. If at all, we’ll see a day or two day of light snow. Everyone panics and just stays home (even before COVID forced it on us all). Having personally owned many Mercedes over the years, I’ve developed a great appreciation for their style, mechanical reliability, and overall driving experience. I’m convinced you’ll be proud to own and drive this one as well.
CONDITION:
As outlined, this is a clean, well-cared-for Benz. I take pride in my vehicles offered here and feel you should know as much about them as possible. Accordingly, here’s a list of the good and also any small things needing attention: The car idles, runs, and drives like a Mercedes is built to – immediate, strong oil pressure, good battery and charging system, no overheating and no brake pull to either side. The automatic transmission shifts strongly and just as it should. I’ve put on close to 400 miles over the past two months including freeway cruising at 60 MPH. Having the turbocharger really makes an acceleration difference, too! I wouldn't hesitate to drive long-distance immediately in this Benz. Because this car sold new in California, it has a different factory air cleaner assembly and modified turbo location that allowed for cleaner exhaust emissions. I don’t have a receipt for the work, but one can see from the engine photo that a newer turbocharger’s been installed.
The light-yellow paint has been resprayed to the factory original color sometime in the last few years and is in great overall condition. There is no flaking clearcoat, paint scratches or rock chips. Though I’m not an expert, I’ve not found any evidence of accidents or body repair. Good chrome and exterior trim all around, too, though it could do with a polishing. The front fenders, doors, rear quarters, and floor pans all appear solid; in fact, the entire undercarriage is in great condition for a 36-year-old car! No other real body flaws to point out. The factory jack and spare are in the trunk well.
It’s pretty rare to come across a vintage Mercedes with a factory Becker AM-FM radio still in place (much less actually working). You’ll either want to replace this one as it’s finicky about firing up and the power antennae isn’t functioning, or replace it with a modern stereo. About the only other encountered flaws are the passenger front and driver rear power windows have bad switches and can be difficult to open.
All four factory alloy wheels are straight and true. They’re wrapped with older, decent 205/70R14 Toyo Spectrum touring radials with at least 75-80% tread remaining.
Take another good look at the interior photos (all pics were taken on 09/03/2021). Hop in and feel comfortable sitting on these buckets for hours. The factory MB-Tex upholstery is in great overall shape! The rear bench hasn’t suffered the fate of most other vintage W123 models and has excellent original MB-Tex on both the base and back rest. Same goes for the front buckets; no holes, discoloration or wear-through spots as you’ll often see. The original dashpad is excellent. No glass cracks, though there’s one fillable bullseye on the passenger’s side windshield. The driver's side front carpet was yet to be cleaned when the pics were taken and has now been done.
While the fan system blows just fine, the A/C will need to be looked over to become functional. Everything else under the hood appears stock and present. I do not know if the odometer is reflecting true miles, but both it and the speedometer work fine. There’s no evidence of any water leakage on the headliner. I always appreciate driving with an open sunroof and this one power opens easily. From years of experience with other Benz, I always ease any motor strain when closing by helping pull it forward manually.
Please check the photos over closely and call me with any questions BEFORE you place a bid! You’re encouraged to stop by, inspect the car at my Auburn, WA warehouse and take it for a test drive. As a respected Ebay seller with many satisfied online buyers, I want you to bid with confidence knowing that this Mercedes runs and drives well AND that it is properly represented to you! Please don’t be upset if I miss a minor flaw or some small issue comes up as NO used vehicle is ever perfect. As always, it’s being sold “as-is, where-is” with a clean, free & clear Washington State title.
Because of the amount of money involved with a vehicle purchase, I reserve the right to cancel your bid if you have any negative feedback. I also ask that potential bidders with a feedback rating of five or fewer transactions on Ebay contact me before placing their bid. Please feel free to contact me directly through Ebay’s message system or, as outlined above, call me at 206/914-1173 anytime. My name is MARK.
A Few Additional Terms and Conditions:
A $500 deposit (paid to Ebay) is required within 24 hours of the auction’s end. The balance of the purchase price is due by cash (in-person only), a wire transfer or other certified funds within seven days of the auction closing. I can accept credit/debit cards for the balance, but will need to first send an invoice from our card processor and will include the 3.25% fee charged by them. Please remember you are bidding to buy, and I fully expect the winning bidder to fulfill their Ebay contract! You’re not bidding to hold or then come inspect and test-drive the vehicle later -- You’re more than welcome to do this before the auction ends.
If you decide to have the Mercedes shipped home, there are numerous vehicle transport companies to choose from. While the company chosen is the responsibility of the BUYER, I ship vehicles regularly and have access to the nationwide Central Dispatch system. I can check to see what typical delivery costs have been to your area recently and we can then post a transport offer for the car at a fair price. Usually, a shipper is lined up within just a few days. You’ll pay the delivery driver COD when they arrive with the vehicle. No upfront deposit or other hassles.
The Benz can be stored free of charge at my location for up to fourteen days after the auction ends assuming full payment has been received. After that period storage is $20 per day.
Final Note: I list and sell my vehicles exclusively here on Ebay. If you see them advertised "For Sale" on other sites BEWARE: you are being scammed. We've recently come across more than a dozen of our past auction vehicles (with my Ebay pics and descriptions lifted verbatim) on the scam site "Classic Cars for Sale" also known as "TOPCLASSICSALE.COM". Thankfully, a few folks have called me at the number I always list in my auctions and were kept from being taken by the crooks behind those two sites!
