Description
Selling my rare Mercedes / Puch G Model Turbo-Diesel manual from 1982 with CA registration.
This car has great story and a powerful diesel motor!
I bought it from a Swiss Fire Brigade where it was in service as an Officers car for 31 years. I brought it to the US two years ago to drive it in California. This Mercedes G model is really a PUCH G model, sold as such in Austria and Switzerland. All Mercedes G models to this day are made by the off-road expert PUCH factory in Graz, Austria.
It was exceptionally well kept by the Fire Department of Bern and has only 29,020m / 47,500km on its chassis. It was kept in the original style of the first ever made G Class cars of the mid 70's.
This G does not have plastic fenders, leather seats, power steering and AC, but instead a no thrills, sparse interior, a hard, flawless suspension, original skinny tires, rare rear double doors, 5 speed manual transmission and options for rear 2WD, regular 4 WD and low gear 4WD, a rear differential, and a solid, military-grade build. A true original G Class.
It is special as it powered by a strong Turbo Diesel. Most G's from that time came equipped with a standard 5 cylinder diesel motor OM 617 from the earlier W123 series which only produces 80hp and barely got them moving.
This G has a Mercedes 6 cylinder TURBO-DIESEL from the W 124 Series from 1987. This improved diesel OM 603.906 has 143hp and 267nm torque. A strong turbo motor well-suited for city driving and more importantly, excellent off-road performance.
In addition it has a 5 speed manual transmission which allows it approx. 22mpg city and 26mpg highway fuel economy. Pretty exceptional for a heavy, classic off-roader from the 80s.
It has a few rusty spots, has a few scratch on the roof that need paint, leaks a bit of oil (like most older diesels) and needs water now and then. But it is VERY reliable. No matter how cold the mornings - this diesel always turns over right away and will go for many, many more miles. The turbo, breaks, clutch, lights, horn, vents, heater, door locks and mechanical parts all work well and have never needed any fixing since I have owned the car. I have driven it to Baja many times and would take it across country tomorrow.
It is the perfect weekend get away car, adventure vehicle but it also takes a baby car seat, takes a ton of luggage and seats 5 people comfortably with seat belts all working.
This Mercedes / PUCH G is a true find - especially with it's CA registration, strong 6 cylinder Turbo-Diesel and classic style. (Puch emblem available)
I hope it finds a good new owner.
(These 80's G's have 14 digits instead of 17 digits VIN numbers, which E-Bay does not accept. I can give you the VIN if you are interested)
